Cleveland Browns 2017 Training Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Njoku needs to be getting the most reps at tight end period.

There's a reason we used a first round pick on him. If we want him to develop, we need to give him the reps.

They've been cautious with his back the last week after the little flare up. Wouldn't look to deep into the depth chart at TE. All three are going to play a lot

TEs are generally brought on slowly in year one. It's a complicated position to learn. There's a reason that rookie almost never contribute significantly at the position. I'd expect DeValve to get more reps this year in the passing game while they work on getting Njoku ready for the future.

I agree, but I would like to see Njoku as the main pass catching Tight End with DeValve as a guy they utilize mostly in 2 TE sets or when Njoku gets a blow.

The best way to develop him is to let him play. We shouldn't be worried about our W/L in the slightest. Worry about developing the guys we drafted.

I absolutely hate that plan. How is he suppose to learn when he's not out there enough to make those mistakes to correct?

Play him. Let him grow while getting some good live game action. This is a skill player not a quarterback. The best way to develop him is to play him.

Njoku was one of the youngest players selected in the entire draft. They moved up to get him in the 1st to add that 5th year. He'll play early but there is no need to force things. It's actually imperative to develop both Njoku and DeValve because those two have the potential to be lethal together on the field at the same time.

There's a reason TEs are bought on slowly, and it's because it's a complicated position to learn. How does any young TE learn?

Everything is earned, unless you're a first round tight end then you better get all the reps over everyone else even if they're more deserving.

Seriously though, Njoku is one of the youngest players in football. Pump the breaks on being an immediate contributor.

We need all the guys who are apart of the future to get snaps not just a few guys. When the season starts, outside of the OLine our oldest guys on offense will be Britt at 28 and Osweiler at 26. Telfer is our blocking TE while DeValve and Njoku are our receiving TEs. They will get snaps based off of what sets seem to work the best with whoever is at QB and it's likely we will start with a higher amount of runs than passes which makes Telfer our number one TE. Njoku also needs to show he deserves the snaps otherwise he shouldn't be playing, just like anyone else on this roster. I understand we need to develop him, but DeValve is also a guy we are developing since it is not like 4th Round TEs cannot become pro bowlers. DeValve with a lot of snaps could end up a sleeper in fantasy football.

Aka I agree with AZ_ which means any other argument is invalid since we don't like to agree on anything! :chuckle:

Technically he is one of the youngest in the NFL, my 9 year old son is much younger and plays football.

Sure he is. And I'm not expecting him to be an immediate impact player. However I don't see the benefit in sitting him and letting other players get reps over him as opposed to letting him learn and grow on the field while we're not likely to be a great team.

I think the Browns are showcasing Osweiler to be honest with you. I know the Schefter report but that could be the Browns holding back knowing the Dolphins were not a good fit. Adam Gase coached both Brock and Cutler but Cutler is the better QB by any measurement. Also Tannehill is their guy so they don't need a young long term QB, they need a stop gap so Cutler is the best of both worlds.

I think the next starting QB that goes down, Osweiler's name will be batted around pretty heavily, especially if he plays well in week 1 and 2 of the preseason.

As far as Kizer, I'd put money on him starting games this year. We ALWAYS get to the 3rd QB in the depth chart at some point so you gotta figure he's going to play out of necessity if not from his performance.

It's good to pump the breaks on a rookie. Philly threw Wentz out there in week 1 and it worked out but generally, that isn't the best strategy. The Browns are going to put him out there when they feel he's ready or an injury happens. They aren't going to force him out there if they don't have to.

Yep. Couldn't agree more. I don't really see the big deal starting him personally.

What if he actually is decent and nets the Browns a solid trade? I know that's not likely, but there's no real harm or risk.

Kizer probably isn't ready. So you don't throw him out there if he's not. If he wins the job, then okay, give it to him.

We know what Kessler is.

I give almost zero chance Brock remains the starter by the end of the season. Maybe not even going into the season.

Doesn't really matter to me if he starts the season behind center though. It won't last.

If he's the best at his position, he'll play. He's going to play, worked in until he learns how to do things like block and catch consistently.

Reps from practice. To think he can't develop in NFL practices is insane.

Not a lot of rookie tight ends blossom right away.

Even guys like Jimmy Graham and Gronk didn't bust out of the gate in year one.

No. But what is the benefit of getting no game reps? There is none.

The natural talent alone should make him our starter out of the gate. In no way should a first round pick not be starting on a 1-15 football team.

Do you mean game reps during the regular season? Perhaps a lack of game reps isn't good for him, but I can tell you giving him game reps for the sake of giving him game reps if he's a blocking liability sure as hell won't help the team during games either.

Further, if his blocking isn't developed yet, you can't just throw him out there strictly for passing downs because it'll add an element of predictability.
