2017-18 Cleveland Indians Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Think Santana is a prime QO candidate.

Santana is always a slow starter, gets better as the season goes on. I don’t hat him.

Kipnis, on the other hand, is more useless than a bucket of loose stools, from someone with amoebic dysentery.

Quite an indictment, I know. And to think of how much of a hero he would have been, had his bat been not QUITE so quick in the 9th inning of Game 7.

Kipnis' WAR:

2012: 3.9
2013: 5.7
2014: 0.7
2015: 4.6
2016: 4.0
2017: 0.4

For reference, Lindor finished 2017 at 4.1.

2014 and 2017 were the two seasons in his career he missed significant time due to injuries. I'm not saying he'll be a 2018 All-Star, but can we stop acting like he's trash?

When he is healthy he is good and when he gets hurt he is bad. I think he will have a better year in 18 and is a trade candidate in 19 (likely to get a couple young reliever type of deal for him since we lack bullpen arms long term.

@BimboColesHair what do you think about trying to sign Cain to a 4 year contract?

Selling low on Kipnis, or giving up on him in general, would be a huge, huge mistake by a team who has their entire core locked up for only 1 more year.

Okay, but where do you play him then? It appears as though the organization is dead set on keeping Ramirez at 2B.

Does he even want to play anywhere other than 2B?

I don't think the organization is dead set on keeping Ramirez at 2B.

I think they wanted to continue doing what had been successful for them in the regular season when they won a ton of games down the stretch with a Gio/Lindor/Ramirez/Santana grouping that was playing great defensively, so they stuck with that even when Kipnis came back.

But, barring injury, I think opening day we see Ramirez at 3B and Kipnis at 2B again.

Next season Diaz or Zimmer will be starting the season at AAA and possibly both could be depending on what we do in free agency since a guy like Cain is my target. Kipnis will be at 2B, but I expect him to play some OF as well, but we are lacking a RH bat so we will get a RH OF bat in free agency which makes no room for Kip in the OF

If Kip does return to 2B then, it appears as though the lineup next year should be practically identical to this season if they are able to re-sign Santana and pick up Brantley's option.

1. Lindor-SS
2. Kipnis-2B
3. Brantley-LF
4. Encarnacion-DH
5. Ramirez-3B
6. Santana-1B
7. Chisenhall-RF
8. Zimmer-CF
9. Perez/Gomes-C

Personally, I hope they elect to re-sign Bruce instead of picking up Brantley's option, but it seems doubtful that occurs. Bruce's power in the middle of the lineup and his reliability are much needed.

Depressing stat of the day. If they don't win it in 2018, it will likely be the end of this window before they blow it up and people in their 70s will never see an Indians championship.

I really like Jay Bruce but Santana makes more sense to me based on defense and flexibility. I can see Bruce being DH-only in the near future and we already have one of those. Meanwhile, Santana was very good at 1B in 2017 and could play LF, RF, or 3B in a pinch.

Just not true.
As much as we are hating on them right now, a lot of players will be gone that the teams success depends on. The back end of their dominant bullpen will be gone. And, as of right now Santanta, Bruce, Chisenhall and Brantley will be gone. The players that replace them unless they look to FA, won't be in their prime like they are now.

Not even remotely true...but consider the source.
Speaking of being gone.
