Get Excited Somewhere Else: John Dorsey

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Anyone have a link to the interview on CLE radio earlier with the KC beat writer that wasn't exactly praising Dorsey? Saw something on Twitter about it earlier tonight.

I am one, but I hate how millenials live life thinking nothing worthwhile existed before their/our birth. Bernie isn't a track athlete, but he was a damn good QB. Our memory of it shouldn't inflate or deflate that.

Kosar was a Pro-Bowl QB that led his team to three AFC Title games.

He was a very good QB for five years. I don't know how that can be disputed.

I don’t have the link but I listened to it all. Very interesting interview. He basically said that Dorsey is one of the best scouts he’s ever known of... lives and breathes tape and player evaluation. Very trustworthy in that area and is good at leading his scouts.

However, he also said that Dorsey’s bad in interviews and that he is his own PR nightmare. Gets himself into trouble with the media with his temperament and personality.

More importantly, he brought up that in spite of his excellent player evaluation skills, he has proven to be a horrible cap manager/negotiator and that the Chiefs are going to pay for his mistakes this offseason. Most specifically extending Houston and Berry a season late and having to break the bank for them the next offseason. He believed pretty strongly that Dorsey can only work with a strong cap guy around him that he respects and will listen to, so hopefully DePodesta is that guy.

I think people need a better understanding of what DePodesta does.

Just because he went to Harvard doesn’t mean he’s the Browns NFL salary cap guru, because he’s not.

From as best I can tell, DePodesta’s main role with the organization is creating processes to find and then exploit market inefficiencies, whatever those may be.

It could be something on the nose with player evaluation like (JUST a hypothetical example) “research and data has shown that drafted OL have a higher bust rate than other positions and the ones that don’t bust it takes longer to develop into competent starters, so we will choose to agreeesively address that position in free agency rather than using draft assets” or “players with these key athletic testing benchmarks have a higher hit rate, so we’ll focus our efforts there in the later rounds” or it could be more subtle like what the players eat, how long the practice, etc.

The NFL is a hive. It’s full of group think and “football guys” doing things off feel and gut. There’s a wealth of information at every teams fingertips that they can use to go along with their gut that can make decisions easier

Almost everyone zigs. If you find places to zag before anyone else, chances are very high you’ll be able to exploit those inefficiencies before everyone else starts doing it.

Paul isn’t even based in Ohio. This idea that he’s the Ivy League educated bean counter negotiating contracts with free agents and evaluating draft picks seems misguided at best, totally wrong at worst.

I was under the impression that DePodesta also does work related to organizational structure, identifying strengths and weaknesses efficiencies, etc?

This is my understanding also. I don't think he's as ingrained in the personnel side of football ops as much as everyone thinks, though. I think his job has more breadth than that. As in, he's not evaluating employees/players or picking them, but he's the guy in the room asking "why?" about everything.

The link below is an article that describes him pretty well.

Then hopefully his possible role in this would be to ensure that a solid capologist be brought in to counterbalance Dorsey's lack of control in this area.

<edited to add> Actually Sashi was pretty damn good at this. Too bad they felt compelled to clear him out instead of just working with Dorsey in a different job description, but things rarely happen that way and I can understand why it would have been awkward.

Well, it looks like the front office side of things is beefing-up the volume of their voice. Dorsey having Highsmith & Wolf on board is valuable in more ways than their understanding of each other. It gives him additional leverage against Hue's voice.

Fuck yeah. Now just convince jimmy to fire Hue. It’s not too late.
