2018 Cleveland Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We only talk about who threw the passes when we try to defend Corey Coleman.

As I've mentioned, I think the bad QB play on the Dolphins actually inflated Landry's stats rather than the opposite. But you have to look at the role he plays compared to Coleman's role to understand why. Landry is the safety net, so he relies mostly on very short-yardage throws. Coleman is not that type of player. Well, he can be, but he's used in a ton of different ways on the field because he's a more versatile receiver and is more reliant on QB accuracy than Landry will ever be because his receptions tend to be further down the field.

Landry's stats were inflated because he had shit-tier QBs constantly funneling him the ball on short routes precisely because they were awful at throwing it down the field. Meanwhile, Kizer sucked at throwing short routes too. :chuckle:

Don’t mean to post “off topic” but I’m sure others are talking about this in the FA thread. Can we just merge them all into here and close that other one?

When we sign a FA it will be posted in both threads. Might as well make it easier for everyone to minimize the double reading.

I agree that this is usually only mentioned when someone's poor play is being reasoned through, but it also ignores the fact that there is more than one shitty QB in the NFL.

Did 130 guys in front of Landry really have better QB play last year? A lot of them suffered from the same woes. I don't have the time nor expertise to go through and make QB adjustment factors, but it isn't like Jarvis was at 6.1 and everyone else hovered around 6.3-6.5. There were 52 guys over 8. Explaining that as just poor QB play isn't doing it for me.

Now, Arizona mentioned scheme. And that does play a role in it. But 131/169 is not great.

Granted, it was also his worst year in the category. I'll put it like this, if we use Landry just as the Dolphins did last year with the same amount of targets I don't think that is the way to build a good offense in this league.

Landry is a HUGE get. He does NOT drop balls. He might be a tad bit overrated but MAKE NO MISTAKE he's a huge addition to this team.

Landry's efficiently on targets in 2016, pre-Cutler, was better than both Gronkowski and Danny Amendola with Brady last year and equal to Larry Fitzgerald in 2016, when Palmer had his last good season. Landry catches the ball efficiently with a high number of targets, period. If you want to make a big deal about yards per attempt, sure. That's not his game. He gets first downs and moves the chains.

My thing with this type of analysis is that there are just way too many variables to consider.

QB play, scheme, game state.....etc. All can adversely swing numbers in one direction or another and don't necessarily have a direct correlation to the skill of the wide out. If a team played from behind a lot, against soft zone, that would likely destroy his YPC numbers. That's just one example of many. I'd be more interested to see his stats against a teams' second corner....which he will now get to face on every down.

He's not perfect but he's also not as inefficient as he was last season. With a #1 WR to pair him with, I'd bet he's a tick better than his 2016 season.
