The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Except she ended up just blindly crucifying a bunch of the Masters, even ones who voted against the murder of those children....

Not trying to defend the Masters, obviously, but Dany does have precedent of rash shows of force that backfire. I'm actually pretty pro-Dany, but after burning the Tarlys I'm really wondering if they are going to make her a tragic figure at the end of the day rather than the messiah we were led to believe she was.

I don't disagree with any of that, which is why I added the bit about her people disagreeing with her tactics.

Also, again, I don't think Randyll is a particularly quality human being, but is his xenophobia really that hard to understand? He lays it out pretty clearly. Dany, to him, is a foreign invader who brings dragons, slave soldiers, and Dothraki (who are viewed as savages and let's be honest, they are) to Westeros to wage a war of conquest.

How exactly do you expect her to be viewed by a guy like Tarly?

Yeah, but Randyll was a total cunt even beyond his xenophobic views. I mean, the dude threatened to murder his own son because he wasn't man enough. And while Sam is definitely a pussy, he's also been pretty useful so far. The Night's Watch certainly found ways to utilize his strengths.

Yeah, I know, I mean I'm really not defending him at all. Just don't think killing his son was necessary by Dany.

I see that burning someone alive is looked at as worse than beheading. I get it. But she has dragons, that's kind of her thing. I think she has mistepped in this story, but saying that she should have killed people another way seems like we're splitting hairs (I know it's easy for me to say :chuckle:).

But again, she said "Yo, I just defeated you. You're getting burned alive unless you follow me. After all, Olenna did join me by choice. Out of respect I'm not doing it unless you choose incorrectly." Not many people are afforded that choice. I'm not even team Dany, but I'm not mad at her for it.

Yea, and it was a quick death, not like burning Mance at the stake. And like I said, it was also "or join the Watch." I mean, that gets overlooked but it's important.

But I'm with you: the manner of death is kinda secondary, unless it's some endless drawn out torture scene. Randyll Tarly surely knew he was going to die if he was defeated.

Here's the thing. I've read her last chapter in ADWD a few times and it seems the lesson George wants to impart, at least to me, is she was too nice to the Masters. That's why she got the Quaithe version of Olenna's speech to "Be a Dragon" in that chapter. I fully expect her to return and unleash holy hell when she gets back. She might just kill Victarion cause he's in the way.

Just sort of a random thing, but HBO has to have the worst security ever. They've managed to block most of the plot leaks, but now guys are all over their sets snapping pics.

Not the far away shit, but people working for them, on their sets.

Maybe HBO actually wants their stuff to leak to build hype?

Manner of death is important.

In most medieval societies manner of execution for nobles was always different from those of commoners. It was an important distinction that could lead to rebellion if not followed.

Lord Tarly should have been beheaded. That is the only acceptable method of execution by the law of most societies back then. By roasting the Tarlys alive, Dany is sending a message that she does feel bound by the laws of Westeros and it can be construed as the act of a tyrant. Robert's Rebellion had legal standing because he was also fighting a tyrant.

Convincing Lords to flock to the banner of a tyrant is much more difficult task and that is why Tyrion was rightfully upset.

Where are you guys getting the "join the Night's Watch" thing? Tyrion was the one who brought it up as a suggestion and Tarly immediately refuted it. I don't think Dany said a thing.

Her exact words were join me, or die.

So i'm watching game of thrones again now with my old folks(We are currently in season 2 episode 5)...both of them are 60.

Issue is that they have some serious memory problems and I have to remind them all the time which one is a Lanisster, Targaryen, Baratheon, etc...The more families that are brought in to the show, the worse it gets for me.

Another issue I have is the uptick in "science fiction" in season 2. They loved season 1, it was fairly realistic still...but the red lady giving birth to the shadow was a bit too much for them in that regard.

My mom keeps screaming during bloody scenes and especially during decapitations she is totally losing it, but that's something I can still work with. I do wonder how they are going to handle all the ridiculous stuff that are about to come.

Oh and don't get me started on the sex scenes. My god are they embarrasing to watch together.

Damn, I forgot how good the 1st season actually was.

Season two was a bit rough for GoT in retrospect. There are some awesome moments, but it's mostly just spinning the wheels until you get to the Battle of the Blackwater and then season three, where the shit starts to hit the fan constantly.

How do we think the Jon and Dany dilemma is going to resolve in the final 6 eps when they both will clearly find out about Jon's (Aegon's) parentage? Jon is next in line but maybe they strike a deal?

To me, there is no conclusion that makes sense if they both live.

1. Dany rules, Jon marries her: Too anticlimactic. Jon doesn't come back to life for that. Neither are built for intentional incest either.

2. Dany rules, Jon goes back North and wardens/rules it: Also nah.

3. Jon Rules: Don't see it it, Jon doesn't want it. He'd rather Dany do that ish.

Only conclusion is that one of them dies. My money is on Jon. He sacrifices himself somehow. He died once already. Isn't terribly excited about still being alive. Completed his role of defeating the Night's King (presumably), put Dany on the throne. He can die having done that.

Better bet is everyone dies and none of this comes to pass. But I assume that they will at least discuss what they plan on doing onscreen.

The Robb stuff was pretty strong. But yeah, overall one of the weaker seasons.

It's pretty bad so far if i'm being honest.

They were so excited during and after season 1 and season 2 just pales in comparison. The excitement has definitely worn off some.

It was great at the time, but it's pretty slow on a re-watch. They seemed to realize that in later seasons and always added in a couple of major events throughout the season to space things out better.

I'll have to re-watch yet again, but I was always pretty jazzed at the King in the North stuff, anything Glover-related: "Your meat... is bloody tough!", Robb's quotes being some of the best: "You insult yourself Kingslayer, you've been beaten by a boy...", and Talisa will always be the GoT queen of my heart.
