2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What does everyone think is the % odds that Jontay Porter and Zhaire Smith remain in the draft?

Tankathon has them at 15 and 11 in their mock...no way they'd drop out if they feel confident they'll go that high, right? Of course, that's just one opinion and most mocks still have them in the late first round probably.

I think they stay in. They both have potential to rise up some teams boards as they both offer something a bit different. Jontay has that boris diaw floor game and athleticism and hes very young, smith has prototypical size and huge upside. lotto team will fall in love with them once the process starts

Tankathon guy isn't really much of a draft expert, but I love their site.

As far as where to expect guys to get picked I'd only look at ESPN. They use intel from teams and agents too in their rankings and are as accurate as it gets.

They had Zhaire #17 and Jontay #35 in their last rankings March 27th.

Not a snowball's chance in hell Jontay lasts til 35 if he stays in the draft. You're giving ESPN too much credit.

I like Jontay much more than 35. I might even prefer him over Zhaire actually, but not sure yet.

I just know how much NBA teams value athleticism. They overvalue it IMO, and that's what can hurt Jontay a ton.

Go back and look at ESPN/DX's past rankings and mocks. They're very much in line with the actual draft slots, whether you like it or not lol.

Is this when they do or don't shuffle them around after the fact? :chuckle:

Your point's well taken of course. But I do think a team will bite on Jontay somewhere in the teens. Every team's analytics person will be stumping hard for him, lol.

Finally made a scouting report for Zhaire Smith. I'm clueless on this guy. Can see him going to a team that uses him incorrectly and he shoots <40% from the field. Can also see him being what he was in college, but at the NBA level. Never seen a player like him.

I don't think his shot will ever come around enough to be a knockdown guy, or a guy that defenses won't try to funnel the ball to in the playoffs.

Gunna do Jontay Porter and Malik Newman next probably. Am up to 42 done now after taking out Gafford. Guys who I've not yet done that I'm considering:

Tyus Battle
Jalen Brunson
Jontay Porter
Jalen Hudson
Jerome Robinson
Moritz Wagner
Kevin Hervey
Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk
Isaac Bonga
Allonzo Trier
Gary Clark
Rodions Kurucs
Arnoldas Kulboka
Admiral Schofield
Malik Newman
Tadas Sedekerskis
Jaylen Adams
Kenrich Williams
Kilian Tillie
Shamorie Ponds
Jarred Vanderbilt
Gary Trent Jr
Jarrey Foster
Justin Jackson
Tony Carr
Donte Divincenzo
De'Andre Hunter

I really want to avoid doing guys that end up returning to NCAA obviously. I think Justin Jackson and Tony Carr also have already signed agents along with Malik Newman, so would consider doing them next also.

Please give me suggestions off this list or guys that are not top 30 that I may not have lol.

That's Chad Ford that supposedly did that. He's no longer with ESPN. DraftExpress is legit - and they're now running the show on ESPN.

And yeah, I fully expect Jontay to get moved up their board by draft time. Maybe the uncertainty on him staying the draft is holding his ranking back some. But at the same time, Pelton at ESPN came out with his draft model rankings (which had Porter #1) quite awhile ago, and they did already move him up around that time likely partially due to that.

Spellman gives me Nance vibes.

Had no idea he was 21 though. He's a redshirt freshman. How is that even possible?

Can you also post the list of guys you have done, so I don't suggest those by mistake?

Jevon Carter seems like an obvious one, for instance, but I vaguely recall that maybe you did him already? Keenan Evans is another guy who surely deserves a spot on the list...I think he's somewhat under the radar because he shot poorly from 3 this season, but big picture he has the profile of a nice sparkplug bench guard.

I would give suggestions off the list, but I feel like I should suggest players I don't already know a lot about, and then I just gravitate towards cool names like Admiral Schofield. I'll think about it :chuckle:

He moved around a lot in High School. Started 9th grade at one place, but was placed in 8th grade when he enrolled at a private school mid year. Spent a couple years at North Royalton before moving on to prep school.

Then he was declared ineligible for his freshman year at Nova due to him graduating high school a year after his class (because of the starting 9th grade, but ending up in 8th grade thing). Same reason he didn't play his senior year at North Royalton.

Re-calculated Euroleague box plus/minus through the end of the regular season. Doncic has some company at the top after slipping from an astronomical +9.3 in the first half to a more modest +7.2, but still finishes at the top of the league:

22-year-old 76ers prospect Jonah Bolden and 23-year-old Spurs prospect Nikola Milutinov also rank fairly high.

Other under-25 players who broke the top-40 are 23-year-old Dejan Davidovac and 24-year-old Vincent Poirier, 20-year-old Icelandic giant Tryggvi Hlinason, 24-year-old Cavs prospect Arturas Gudaitis, and 23-year-old Ognjen Dobric. Coincidentally, Dimitrios Agravanis (whose rights the Cavs traded to the Kings) ranked dead last with a -10.4 BPM.

Tryggvi's rating comes with a large asterisk as he played just 90 minutes in the season, but it's encouraging that he held his own against such a high level of competition, including a solid 8-point 6-rebound outing in a career-high 20 minutes against Panathinaikos last week. Decent chance he gets drafted in the late second round this year.
