First: I agree the Spurs probably would not make that move as advertised - they have a proven history of effectively selecting and developing young talent, so Walker is probably very highly valued there.
That said, I think the salary dump of Gasol is part of the rationale for including Walker in a deal for Hill...along with the obvious PG injuries in SA (Dejounte Murray is done for the year it appears). The deal would open up a bunch of space for SAS this summer.
The key, and I haven't followed the Spurs enough to know, is how valuable of a piece Gasol still is to them at the age of 38.
I think trading him for a passable pg who is a great defender would work. The expiring seals it.
