Deshaun Watson: Third Highest Paid QB in the AFC North (OUT for 2023)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
As someone who was all for the Watson trade - if the Browns can somehow get out of that contract, I think they should.

At this point its been 4 years since he played at a high level. I just can't imagine him ever reaching even 75% of that at this point. Call me pessimistic but between his health and his lack of playing, I think it's a real longshot now. And if he can't get there, the Browns are beyond fucked with his contract.

For instance, I would much, much rather kick the tires on Justin Fields if the Browns can get out of Watson's contract. Especially given all the extra money we'd have to spend to put more pieces around him (Fields). And I think he'd fit this offense like a glove.

Honestly, this is something that crossed my mind a few months ago. "Man, if the Browns could get out of Watson's contract cleanly, I'd probably do it." But it was more of a dream than a possibility. But now that there may be a potential out - I think it's something that should be seriously considered.

All that being said, this will probably be a big nothingburger and the Browns will move forward with Watson, praying he returns to form and stays on the field. And that's fine. Hell, I still do think there is a chance for him to be great again. But the light at the end of the tunnel is fading, and if I were the Browns, I'd cut my losses at this point if I could.

Why are they beyond fucked?

They finally have a competent GM and HC. They will be fine. What they need to do is not punt on the backup QB spot this year. Whether that is Fields or Flacco, you can’t have DTR as the backup. He’s third string.

Watson looked pretty good when healthy so I’m not too worried as long as we have a competent backup. Mr Irrelevant just made the SB so nothing is beyond fucked if we just get a solid backup plan

Sounds like a good reason to resign Flacco.
I enjoyed the Flacco ride. I really did. However, if he is back, it’s going to get bad and ugly.
Remember the Couch/Holcomb situation. The minute Watson has a bad game, and he will, the boo birds will be out and calling for Flacco.
That’s the absolute last thing this team needs is a QB controversy with a guy owed $200 million guaranteed.
We can not sign Joe.

This is essentially the same reason why I think Fields as a backup would be a bad idea. Number one, I just done think he’s that good. Number two, the minute Watson had a bad game the large OSU contingency would be calling for Fields. You just have to look at Braylon and Peppers for evidence. Both guys certainly had their flaws, but both were generally overly criticized because they went to Michigan.

Yea but people loved DPJ and was really hoping he broke out and were in his corner…

The expectations for Braylon & Peppers were high and they really did not deliver which was the primary reason as to why they were criticized…

When hasnt that been the case though? Even our beloved Bernie suffered the same fate and that was before social media. Fans cant dictate who our QB 2 is. Players just need thicker skin

If DeShaun Watson were a rock star, he would be Jackson Browne. You see that early stardom and some undeniable talent... but there's questions if it's all a product of his surroundings.

Then the seedy underbelly gets exposed. It becomes hard to tell what is real and what has been embellished. In the end, the talent is there but the confidence is shot.

I saw Jackson Browne live about ten years ago. He is floating along and has the undeniable chops yet still relies on support to get through. Maybe Watson isn't as good as some people thought, but boosting his confidence might get some returns on the investment.

Social media strikes again. Instead of root root root for the home team through thick and thin we wanna throw anyone under the bus the second they make a mistake. Impatient nation

Btw Jackson Browne rules

If it gets ugly that’s because Watson played like shit. Which if that’s the case fuck em we need to win. We can’t keep waiting on Watson to figure it out. No one is going to be calling for Flacco if Watson is playing well.

Any opportunity to get out from under Watson would be a welcome one for me. Maybe they could dig up a few speeding tickets or something.

They’ll have a first rounder in 2025 for the first time in four years to replace him.

The browns have a stellar record at drafting QBs in the first round, so I can’t see how this plan goes sideways.

I wish we would do that but we’re stuck with him for a few more years probably. Maybe draft a potential replacement and groom them for a year?

Doubt the 2025 pick is very high though, which is good I guess as it means we contended. Just doubt Watson is going to be a massive reason why.

This feels like the Skip Bayless debates himself video.
There's a disconnect in the logic of your comment. The current (presumably competent) GM and HC have never drafted a first round QB. Baker was drafted by Dorsey. So... ???
