As someone who was all for the Watson trade - if the Browns can somehow get out of that contract, I think they should.
At this point its been 4 years since he played at a high level. I just can't imagine him ever reaching even 75% of that at this point. Call me pessimistic but between his health and his lack of playing, I think it's a real longshot now. And if he can't get there, the Browns are beyond fucked with his contract.
For instance, I would much, much rather kick the tires on Justin Fields if the Browns can get out of Watson's contract. Especially given all the extra money we'd have to spend to put more pieces around him (Fields). And I think he'd fit this offense like a glove.
Honestly, this is something that crossed my mind a few months ago. "Man, if the Browns could get out of Watson's contract cleanly, I'd probably do it." But it was more of a dream than a possibility. But now that there may be a potential out - I think it's something that should be seriously considered.
All that being said, this will probably be a big nothingburger and the Browns will move forward with Watson, praying he returns to form and stays on the field. And that's fine. Hell, I still do think there is a chance for him to be great again. But the light at the end of the tunnel is fading, and if I were the Browns, I'd cut my losses at this point if I could.
Why are they beyond fucked?
They finally have a competent GM and HC. They will be fine. What they need to do is not punt on the backup QB spot this year. Whether that is Fields or Flacco, you can’t have DTR as the backup. He’s third string.
Watson looked pretty good when healthy so I’m not too worried as long as we have a competent backup. Mr Irrelevant just made the SB so nothing is beyond fucked if we just get a solid backup plan
