The way everyone was hyping JR Smith this summer as a potential Cav (myself included), tonight provided a nice comparison between him and Boobie as they were both key players off the bench. To be honest, after tonights game, I'm glad that we didn't waste any trade pieces on this guy. His defense is a joke, and Boobie was just as effective as him all night long. Here are some numbers:

Smith:
Tonight -- 18pts, 3 ast, 1 to, 1 stl
'08-'09 -- 10.6 pts, 2.1 ast, 2 to
Career -- 10.9 pts, 1.6 ast, 1.36 to
Career 3pt % -- .364

Boobie:
Tonight -- 15pts, 1 ast, 0 to
'08-09 -- 8.3 pts, 1.5 ast, 0.63 to
Career -- 7.5 pts, 1.9 ast, 0.99 to
Career 3pt % -- .423

They are relatively close overall -- but the two things that stand out to me are that Smith has more turnovers and a lower 3 pt %. Not to mention, at this point Boobie and LBJ pretty much act on ESP when they are on the floor together. Smith still has the advantage over Boobie overall offensively, but his defense doesn't exist. However, give Boobie another 20 games or so this year and he might be a better overall player than Smith. Boobie's confidence has improved greatly this year, and he looks really comfortable on the floor.

Smith's ceiling is higher, going after him was never about what he'd be this year, but what he could be in another year or two. For now, Smith is a 10-15ppg player off the bench, as a starter in the future he's going to be a 20-25ppg scorer in the same vein as Jason Richardson. His defense is a bi-product of poor coaching on that end of the floor, the tools to be a good defender are there, just not the teaching.

I expected a lot more from he and Klieza this season. Kind of baffling really. Boobie went back to attacking the basket when the shot wasn't falling and for the most part was very successful. Chauncey said it all in his brief interview. Mentioning that it is hard to lock down and defend when you are always pushing the ball.

I wanted JR before we got Mo, but i'm pretty sure that Mo killed all hope of getting JR. His defense is horrid, and with Mo we'd be terrible on D.

I must admit. I was one of the biggest JR to Cleveland supporters here. But that was before the Mo deal we pulled. I was just a little desperate mid summer

I'm not saying Boobie's better -- though I don't think you can predict that Smith has a higher ceiling long-term. Reread my post. I'm saying that with Boobie playing like he is, there's no need for Smith on this team RIGHT NOW. And if that's the case, I'm glad that we still have our trading chips for someone who will help our team RIGHT NOW. Although as I've posted elsewhere...that may not even be necessary.

JR is a headcase. You never know what you're going to get with the dude. I'm glad we didn't get him particularly the way our offense is running thru Mo. Smith was never going to improve our defense and Mo looks like a very good fit so far. We need to concentrate on adding a more defensive SG if we go the perimeter route in terms of accusations now.

Smith is a better player.... Boobie had the better night...

Smith has dropped a couple 40 point games in his career.. The problem with him is it's either a dunk or a 3.... And he's dumb as a brick...

He's like a better version of Sasha...

We'll call him Black Pavs...

the boobie signing was a no-brainer. if he hadn't sign, the front office would've felt that lebron would think more of leaving when his contract is up. him and bron are that close.

Smith still hasn't grasped that basketball is a team sport.

Team USA picked JR to practice them and not Boobie for a reason... lets all stop being homers here.

Don't get me wrong, I love boobs. I'm glad we have him on our team, but I think JR is better then boobie/has more potential. I think there's reasons JR Smith doesn't play d...
1. If their leader Melo isn't playing defense, what kind of message does that send to their younger players?
2. Does Karl really care about the defensive end of the floor? I'm questioning if he does after seeing him coach for so long and not install one.
3. Does the front office care about defense? They just traded away Camby...
Why not trade away AI, another scrub on defense and keep Camby and Billups? The more guys you got willing to play d, the more you will get wanting/willing to play d.

Boobie is:
1. Surrounded by a defensive minded team and what seems to be a good coaching staff this year.
2. Has support from the leader of the team, who is willing to give it his all.
3. A front office willing to make this team better.

If the whole point in making trades was to win prior to 2010, then JR Smith would not have been worth it compared to Boobie's increased productivity. That's more than clear. Does he have more offensive weapons than Boobie? Yes. Does he shoot the 3 ball better? No. Will he fit better with LBJ? No. Are we sure that he can play good defense? No.

The only real argument in stating that JR is better than Boobie is that his long term potential is higher. But since anything past 2010 deserves to be in the same category as unicorns and the tooth fairy, who gives a shit if he has potential a couple years from now. We need to win in the next two years. Do you know how many people in this league have undiscovered potential who come off the bench for mediocre teams?...the trade section of this forum lists plenty of them. As for right now...he's not worth wasting any trade pieces on and I'm glad to see that after the fact, Ferry made good decisions this summer.

He can dribble around defenders as well so I dunno where that leaves this compare and contrast

Dribble around a defender, dribble through a defender...
