Why are we going to need a high-priced SF? All we need is a low usage guy at that spot now that we have 3 scorers in the fold.

You can pay Tristan and then still have two years left before you have to pay Bennett.

There's going to be a new CBA pretty soon. I think there's a pretty good chance that we'll end up with a more player friendly system this time around.

I say we go after Granger in free agency in 2014 if he isn't asking too much. He would be a good fit for the Cavs.

Boozer and Deng are likely gone after this year for them because of the financial situation in Chicago in favor of cheaper options.

We have Kyrie as a max, Dion looking like every bit the $10+ million kind of guy, Bennett I think will be a stud so he is going to have to get paid down the line. Throw in another high priced guy to play SF through FA or trade and we aren't going to have 8-10 million to pay TT to be a bench player without being totally tapped out and only able to add veterans minimum types.

I didn't even address the center spot and we would be totally up against it salary wise. The new CBA makes it damn near impossible to keep a well drafted team together for the long term.

You are missing something here. The key thing is to start the time that you are over the cap as late as possible. There is a very good chance that the players choose to opt out of the present CBA as soon as they have that option. At least, that is the rumor based on how many of them are unhappy with it. Guess what happens if your repeat offender season doesn't occur until then? You may very well never face the repeat offender heavy tax because the rules end up not being not as punitive in the next CBA.

So you think the small market owners are suddenly going to have a change of heart and go back to the rules that allowed the big markets to easily form super teams and spend wildly over the cap?

Other than NJ (whose owner truly has more money than God) you can see the teeth of the new deal doing exactly what the owners wanted as teams are cutting back. That will have a trickle down effect the next few years as far as spreading talent around the league.

The players you should know from how the last NBA/NFL/NHL deals went won't get a better deal, and the system is not going to change much. The owners will always be able to outlast the players in a cba negotiation, and lately it has been more lopsided than ever.

Dan Gilbert is likely the only small market owner that would prefer the old system, which is why the high taxes will likely continue to be here to stay.

Great point. To qualify for the repeat offender tax to must go over the twx 3 out of 4 seasons. The base tax alone is bad but based on projected salaries after everyones extensions were looking at a salary 10 mil over the tax. So its something Gilbert is willing to do.

According to rotoworld:

"No. 5 overall pick Alex Len recently underwent "precautionary" surgery on his right ankle."

Len already had surgery on his left ankle in May. The Suns said this injury in the right ankle was discovered after a "routine" evaluation and he's expected to be ready to start the season. Len's injury was a pretty big red flag before the draft. Precautionary or not, the fact that a seven footer needed a surgery in each ankle before his first training camp is an awful sign.

Wow...surgery on BOTH ankles?

This makes me even more glad that we passed on Len. Granted, Bynum has his own injury issues, but so did Len, Noel, & Oden.

Me, too. Bynum will only cost us 6m, and we still got a potentiall 20/10 guy in Bennett on top of a guy who, when healthy, is arguably the best center in the game. Coincidentally, they also happen to be a PERFECT match for one another.

Len and Noel would cost us a 1st overall pick, and Oden's higher risk (lesser talent, worse knee problems, alcohol issues, Beieber fever) with lower reward than Bynum.

The addition of Jack seems to quiet the Oladipo supporters. We added a high potential center with knee problems, so the Noel supporters have been silenced. Len looks even worse then Z, so Len camp can't say much.

Where the bitch could be is at small forward. The cavs still don't have that starting small forward. I assume the cavaliers liked the potential of Bennett over Porter. We'll see how their rookie seasons go.

If Thompson breaks out, Bennett doesn't play much/can't play small forward and Porter comes out a gang buster with the wiz there's going to be some angst. I had Noel/Porter 1/2.

The RealGM report offered more specifics:

“As a precautionary measure, our medical staff determined that it would be prudent to perform surgery on Alex Len’s right ankle at this time,” said Lon Babby. “That surgery was successfully completed this morning. As part of a routine evaluation, our medical team identified the very beginnings of a stress fracture in Alex’s right ankle even though Alex was entirely asymptomatic. We expect him to be available to begin the season.”

:uhh:

What's scary is that Len hasn't played since, what, April, yet he somehow got a stress fracture I'm his foot just from rehab or daily living. Red flags? Nah.

Wow. So our medical staff is very good at what they do. Kind of makes me feel better about Bynum. If they thought he couldn't play anymore, I doubt they would have even offered him a contract. The fact they checked his knees and offered him a solid contract tells me they believe he can come back and be at worst 50% of what he used to be.

Oh man. This could turn out to be a disaster for Phoenix. Crazy how this stuff only surfaces AFTER the draft.

If I recall correctly, didn't Bynum's camp make sure that no teams were allowed to get a CURRENT MRI of his knees, opting to instead bring their own to show the Cavs and other teams? Regardless, I still don't believe that they would offer him a contract if they weren't somewhat optimistic he's going to get on the floor at some point this year

There were mixed reports, so I'm not sure what Bynum's camp allowed. This is what Jason Lloyd reported: "As expected, Bynum did not work out for the Cavaliers on Monday. But the medical staff was able to examine his knees, a league source told the Beacon Journal, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the negotiations."

Porter and McLemore a combined 7/36 in their summer league openers?
