2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Fuck, Hawes might be our best option at center now. Fuck.

Hawes has value. This isn't Ryan Hollins we are talking about. Of course, we can't spend a whole lot of him and i have a feeling some dumb-dumb team will get all wacky and offer far too much.

Not saying it wouldn't be great to have a true center or just better center, but I never got the impression that our center play was what kept us from being a 500+ team in the East and making the playoffs.

Check that. Post Bynm center play. Bynum screwed us up bad

If worst case scenario, we're stuck with Andy, Zeller, and a re-signed Hawes, I don't think that alone stops us from being a 44-48 win team

We better be making some moves to go all the way from 33 to 44.

Let's see what Utah does. If they end up signing Hayward to a max deal, maybe they'll be a little more inclined to move Kanter. Doubting it, though, because they'll still have cap space, but I can always dream.

I think trying to resign Spencer Hawes would be a great start. If not, try our luck at Gortat. The Cavaliers should also look into signing a guy like Chandler Parsons if he isn't traded in a deal where Houston clears cap to make their run at Melo etc. And yes, if LeBron is interested  pitch your offer to him.

I feel like Gordon Hayward could be a big target for us. He is a RFA, so it is more complicated, but he seems to be the versatile well rounded player Griffin and Blatt are going for.

Chandler Parsons too but I won't hold my breath.

Because white

Hawes, Gortat, and Miles are 3 guys I would not mind if we can't go all-in with the LBJ/Love route.

If they called asking what you would offer for him, what do you say? (kanter)

This would go under a trade thread but maybe Griff has his eyes on a youngish C he can acquire from another team?
Mozgov or Kanter types? When you figure in their stashed overseas players both Denver and Utah seem to have extra centers. The Cavs just need to stay flexible and eventually a C will come available. If Bron actually does want to go to the Clips I'd gladly take DeAndre off their hands.

Edit: I see I'm not the first to mention Kanter.. :chuckles:

I already consider a whole season without Bynum, Hawes for a full season(that was the scenario I described in the 44-48 win comment), Brown to Blatt, Wiggins drafted, and healthy Bennett positive moves. But yes, lets definitely make some more.

Portland went from a 33 win team to a 54 win team after swapping out Hickson for Lopez. I am not saying that Lopez alone netted them an additional 21 wins, but I do think a Lopez-caliber center would greatly benefit this team.

I've made a list of the guys I believe the Cavs should give a look at, I have many many more obvious choices on my mind but these are just a couple

PG: Steve Blake/Shaun Livingston/Beno Udrih (I think these guys should get looked at if Jack is moved)
SG: CJ Miles/Alan Anderson/Chris Douglas-Roberts
SF: Chandler Parsons/Trevor Ariza/PJ Tucker
PF: Josh McRoberts/Channing Frye/Anthony Tolliver (These guys should be looked at if Tristan is moved, they would all be a nice placeholder vet in the lineup until Bennett is "seasoned")
C: Marcin Gortat/Chris Kaman/Nazr Mohammed (Fit the system, Gortat and Mohammed are the only ones that really protect the paint though)

Most of these names are awful defenders, but then again most would come fairly cheap considering who the player is. Food for thought.

After the dream free agents, here are some guys I like at each position depending on their prices...

PG (If we can dump Jack) - Mills, Livingston, Vazquez, Collison. I'd prefer Mills for his shooting and energy. Livington and Vazquez would be great fits due to their passing skills. Collison is a stud defender. Would be nice to have with Kyrie's lack of defense.

SG - Meeks, Vince Carter. Meeks is a knock down shooter. Very unlikely VC would want the mentor role over trying to win a ship, but he's still a good shooter and I think he would be an awesome mentor for Wiggins if he bought into it. He was Wiggins' idol growing up.

SF - Try to bring CJ Miles back. He was a very good shooter last year. He seems like a good teammate and he can win some games on his own when he catches fire. Not much else I like here. Parsons would be awesome, but I can't see it happening unless we ridiculously overpaid. I don't trust Ariza, who seems to always have a great year in a contract year and then go right back to being mediocre after being signed.

PF - Diaw. I think he'd be PERFECT to help this team with Blatt's ball movement offense. He is probably the best passing PF in the world. I would love to have him come here. His influence on the game goes far beyond his stats.

C - Gortat. He is by far the best C available outside of Monroe (restricted). Personally, I'd throw a ton of money at him to get him here. I don't see how we ever find a better Center now that we are probably done drafting near the top of the draft and likely won't have big cap space after this offseason.

Question.... Are we basically guaranteed to spend all of our cap space this summer regardless of LBJ coming here or not? Even if we don't spend this year, won't we likely be over the cap or very close to over the cap going into 15/16 because of Kyrie's likely max extension + all the other young guys contracts rising + a possible Thompson extension?

Basically, I want to know if this offseason is basically our last chance to really improve by using cap space?

I would think both Parsons and Hayward, but especially Hayward, only become targets if we do move Dion. Otherwise, where is the fit?

Yes. Both are great fits with Wiggins at the 2, but only if Dion is traded.
