2014 NFL Draft Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm not sure if you meant to connect it, but IMO 40 time has absolutely nothing to do with pocket quickness, aside from speed of feet movement. Pocket awareness MUST be coupled with quick feet in order for a QB to succeed within the pocket.

40 times of some current QB's (good and bad)
Aaron Rodgers 4.71
Tom Brady 5.28:chuckles:
Drew Brees 4.83
Philip Rivers 5.08
Eli Manning 4.90
Big Ben 4.75
Joe Flacco 4.84
Matt Ryan 4.89
Andrew Luck 4.59
Vince Young 4.48
Blaine Gabbert 4.61
Christian Ponder 4.63
Brandon Weeden 4.89

Looks like 40 time has little to do with success in NFL (unless you are a running QB)

Some ability to move around in the pocket and avoid the rush is certainly important in the NFL. Look at Weeden in the face of pressure for proof. I've been saying since week four or five that there isn't a definite franchise QB in this draft, but there are a few who may learn to be one in a few years. Knowing that none of these guys has the speed to be a legit running QB cements it.

I can agree that having ability to move around the pocket is very important. There just isn't much to see in 40 times besides sprinting. For another example some RB's or WR's have great speed but don't possess that quick reaction movement to get open. I just do not think the 40 is a necessary factor when looking for a NFL level QB. A guy like Tom Brady ran a 5.28 40 when he was in the combine, which showed it was completely irrelevant to his level of eventual talent.

EDIT: Thanks DaNewCavs, didn't even see your post :chuckles:

Teddy's pro day seemed to put a dent in his draft stock. On my phone but Jeff Reynolds at CBS Sports said his footwork wasn't great, timing was average to poor, and passes wobbled. He also weighed 6 lbs less than the 214 lbs he weighed in at the combine and that teams have serious concerns over his wrist.

My point is that these guys can't be a one read QB like Kaepernick or young Mike Vick while they get used to reading NFL defenses. They will need a year or two to develop like Rogers or Brady... and that's a big IF they have the potential to become Rogers or Brady Lite.

I know some have mentioned passing on a FA FB and using a later round pick on one. I'm all on board for JC Copeland out of LSU. Former defensive tackle, and a monster blocker in my opinion. I'm a UF grad and watch most SEC games. Auburn's run game rightfully earned the headlines this year, but over the past few years during Zachs development at QB they've cycled out 3-4 backs and constantly pounded the ball. He's started the past two years I'd love him

According to nfldraftscout.com (very reputable site when it comes to rankings you guys should be looking at) Brown is the 7th ranked ILB in the draft.
He has a 5th-6th round grade according to scouts on the site.

I am really hoping they can nab the Guard from UCLA with their second round pick. Jim Mora said he was the best pure guard to come out ina few years.

Preston Brown

OVERVIEW
2013: Second-team All-AAC. Led team with 98 tackles. Returned fumble 48 yards for TD vs. Memphis. 2012: Second-team All-Big East. Started all 13 games. Six double-digit tackle performances. Had 17 tackles vs. USF. 13 tackles, INT vs. Cincinnati. 13 tackles in Sugar Bowl win over Florida. 2011: Played in 13 games, started 11. Had 12 tackles vs. Murray State. 2010: Appeared in all 13 games at linebacker and on special teams. High School: First team All-District in Ohio.

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Outstanding size. Physical tackler. Steps downhilll and attacks the run with the proper shoulder. Good eyes and instincts. Delivers some pop on contact and strikes with force. Experienced three-year starter. Good football intelligence -- makes the calls and lines up a defense.
WEAKNESSES Shows some tightness in his movement. Struggles to carry backs and match up with athletic tight ends in man coverage. Limited depth in coverage drops -- is best in small areas. Average coverage instincts. Requires some motivation.

DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 3-4

BOTTOM LINE Aggressive, high-collision 'Mike' linebacker best paired with a demanding position coach who will extract the most from him.

No way he's there in the second, I'd be surprised if he were there at 26, honestly.

Watched the first four minutes of this, I'm sold. I'd take him in the later third or fourth round without question. Lots of good ILBs available around this area, would not complain about Moats one bit.

I wonder if Beckham or someone like that is left at 26 I wonder if we can con the Panthers into trading up and picking up another 4th or 5th rounder in the process.

But I want him on our team

Maybe its me, but the Browns recent moves scream defense at 4. They obviously dont like the QBs, or they dont like the ones likely to be there at 4. Im thinking its either Watkins, Mack or the Okie State corner at 4.

I still want Clowney. Browns weren't able to bring the rush last season. Too many fat slow lineman. Clowney bring an athlete with size that doesn't exist on the team. I'm hoping if the browns can't get a qb they continue to fill their defensive holes and we have a top defense next year.

The biggest problem is he plays a position that doesn't really exist on the team, either.

Would love to trade that pick to Atlanta if it comes to it.

Think we could trade down and get a first for 2015 or is that a pipe dream? I'm not really a draft guru.

I was just thinking, if they didn't like any of these QBs, they could trade down and accrue a 1st for next year. Maybe take Denard, or BPA, and a receiver in the first this year then next year use the two first rounders and whatever else to move up for Mariota/Hundley/Winston (I know it's dumb banking on future drafts, and I don't know how good those guys will be either).

Maybe that's a bit too "far out there" of a scenario.
