2014 Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is going to be an exciting year. They can be a playoff team again, but as is often the case, it comes down to how good our pitching depth is down the stretch.

I really feel Bauer is going to be this years Salazar...people seem to forget that he was valued way more than Salazar throughout the minors...the talent is def there just has to discover it...then we have Carrasco who has a ton of talent...the Indians have some very talented arms and seem to have the right pitching coach to harness all of them.

Bauer is my guy right now. I am also gaining confidence in Carlos, which, as some may know, is surprising because I am a hater.

I'm going to predict that Bauer gets the fifth spot and Carrasco is in long relief as of now.

I disagree. I see Bauer starting the season in CBus, then getting a spot start as needed early in the season, or even being an occasional 6th starter as Tito is already talking of possibly making Salazar the 5th starter to begin the season in order to "stretch him out" and not overload him with innings the first part of the year, thereby saving his arm strength for later in the year. So, instead of 32 or so starts, maybe we should expect to see Salazar get more like 26-27 starts.

I really like Bauer and want to see him perform well, but I think starting the season in AAA to get his "new" mechanics right then letting him be the 6th option early in the year is probably the way to go.

Of course, you never know if someone will get injured or something, in which case I have to assume Bauer would be the first call up if he continues to pitch well and shows consistency with his location.

I will be very disappointed if they don't sign Masterson. The biggest risk with signing pitchers to big money deals is contract length, and he's willing to alleviate that worry by signing a three or four year deal. There's several factors that have to be considered here:

1. He's Very Good Is he Clayton Kershaw? Certainly not, but who is? He's going to give you 200 IP, which is especially important with the rest of the staff being so young. According to Matthew Berry, Masterson allowed a well-hit average of .120 last season, third-best among qualified starters. Masterson also had a higher percentage of opponent plate appearances end in strikeouts (24.3 percent) than Justin Verlander (23.5 percent). At age 28, the Indians would be getting his prime years. He's going to lead by example, another valuable characteristic for guys like Danny Salazar. He's also very close to Tito, and I'd think we want to keep Tito happy.

2. The Market - Masterson could easily get more money on the open market next year. He'll likely be the 1st or 2nd best SP available and could command big-time dollars. Simply put - nobody as good as him is going to give Cleveland a discount. You have to jump at the opportunity.

3) The Core - Michael Brantley, Jason Kipnis, Nick Swisher, Carlos Santana, Michael Bourn, Lonnie Chisenhall, and Bryan Shaw are all under team control through 2017. Danny Salazar, Corey Kluber, Zack McCallister, Vinnie Pestano, Cody Allen, Trevor Bauer, Carlos Carrasco, and Yan Gomes are under team control beyond that. Signing Masterson to a three or four year extension means the Indians would have their entire core in place through at least 2017. How many teams coming off of a playoff appearance can say that?

4) The Fans - For the first time in a long time, the Indians have the fans' attention. The Cavs are still struggling, the Browns are always struggling, and this city is desperately searching for a sports team to love. The Indians could be that. First and most importantly, they're a damn good team. Second, they are a fun team to follow with plenty of fan-favorites. It would be a major move for the front office to show they are seriously committed to bringing a World Series to Cleveland by letting the same fans who watched C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee walk away in consecutive years see the team lock up their top starter. I'm not a "Discount Dolan" type and I rarely bash the Indians when players walk - usually the contracts aren't worth the risk. But this is a unique situation, and signing Masterson is absolutely worth it. For a fan base afraid to buy jerseys with names on the back of them, being able to show them you're going to put a good product on the field for at least the next four seasons could go a long way for this franchise and its support from the fans of Cleveland.

I think what Masterson is doing is very smart. He's stated how he very much wants to be here and leaked out very reasonable salary numbers he's willing to agree to. The cards are on the table and the fans are on his side.

If the Tribe doesn't reciprocate, it'll 100% make them look bad and I don't know if they want to take yet another PR hit and backlash with another FOR starter leaving in free agency.

Would be a real shame if their attendance started to struggle.

no reason for attendance to struggle..at least the Indians win and have an owner who isnt a jackass and makes promises that he cant fulfill

The fans can't even come up with a valid excuse after last year. You want to see them be more consistent before you start going to games? Please, the players deserve to see fans at the games, Indians are the only sports team in Cleveland that has had a winning record in the last how many years.

Attendance is going to stay where it is for the most part, with an incremental rise.

Also, the Blue Jays are signing Ervin Santana to a one year deal it looks like. He was asking for $100M plus at the start of the off-season. Crazy downfall.

And...

Masterson needs to be signed. That's where I come out on it. I'll be very, very disappointed if he isn't.

I've never seen the official "offer" that Masterson made the Tribe. Wasn't it something along the lines of 4/60? You HAVE to jump on that.

I haven't seen word that the Indians have agreed to the deal Masterson proposed. Is the front office telling him to fuck off?
