How high does your draft have to be to get protected? I forget, is it just top 10?

One note from today, Kendrys Morales will reject the Ms qualifying offer and will be a free agent with first round designation.

If we would sign him but Ubaldo rejects our offer won't we get a first round pick anyway?

Provided it's a team outside the Top 10, yes.

They also have a competitive balance pick which is somewhere in the 30-35 range.

I know nothing about baseball off seasons, but I want to learn, so ill be gleaning what i can from this thread. thanks for making it/posting updates

There are plenty of good posters in here who have a firm understanding of some of the rules and practices, as baseball is pretty unique in many ways as it relates to offseason moves.

Hope to see you post more and join the discussion.

Small but important clarification point: As long as we offer the qualifying offer and Ubaldo doesn't sign, we get a compensatory draft pick no matter what.

The MLB draft is unique in that we don't get the receiving team's draft pick (If a team outside the top 10 picks signs a QO Free Agent, their 1st round draft slot disappears altogether, and the round becomes smaller.), and instead we receive a pick sandwiched in-between the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Like b00bie said we also have a competitive balance pick, and those are slotted immediately after the FA compensation picks.

Some notes for you & what they mean:

Right after World Series: Those eligible for free agency become free agents.

Three days after World Series: Option decisions due

(I.E Team Options, Player Options, Mutual Options)

Five days after World Series: Qualifying offers due

-If it is offered by the team & accepted by the player, it's a 1 year deal estimated to be around $12-$13 M this off-season.

-If it is offered by the team & declined by the player before he signs with a new team, his new team surrenders a top draft pick [Top 10 protected - they'd surrender their 2nd pick] and his former team gets a compensatory pick at the end of the 1st round.

-If it is not offered by the team, any team can sign the player without surrendering a draft pick.

Six days after World Series: Free agents can sign contracts with teams other than their former clubs

12 days after World Series: Players must accept or reject qualifying offers

November 11th - 13th: GM Meetings

November 20th: Deadline for setting 40-man roster in advance of Rule 5 Draft

-A minor league player is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft if they are not on the 40 man roster and have:

1.) 5+ years of service if they signed while 18 or younger.

2.) 4+ years of service if they signed while 19 or older.

December 2nd: Deadline for teams to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players

December 9th - 12th: Winter Meetings

-This is typically where you'll see the most rumors & rumblings during the off-season, mostly trade talk.

December 12th: Rule 5 Draft

January: Teams, players exchange arbitration figures

February: Arbitration hearings take place

If anyone else can think of anything to add, feel free to add to it, but just thought I'd give him a certain timeline to go by.

I expect to see an Indians blockbuster trade at some point in this thread.

Ubaldo still hasn't voided his option year, correct? What's he waiting for?

He's waiting for the Indians to make their move I would assume. It's a long shot that the Indians would void their end, but if they did then Ubaldo would receive a $1M buyout.

Indians picked up his option last week. Now we just wait and see what Ubaldo does. He has no time limit to make his decision either.
