2016-2017 Indians Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Does that mean football players underhand nerf balls to each other in May? Basketball players roll the dice with Pop-A-Shot in July?

I just kid. Good stuff.

Hitting off the tee is probably the equivalent to a QB throwing route trees in shorts and a t-shirt.

Really, the only live pitching hitters see in an off season is if they are hitting off a breaking ball machine, or if they are tracking pitches. Can't work on tweaks or improvements to your swing mechanics when you're seeing live pitching...

Also...won't be surprised to see Brantley clear for full go work in a few weeks. You're really close when you're doing tee work.

I'm not making fun of him hitting off a tee. I'm just saying we've heard that before and it's meant nothing.

Fool me once...
Fool me twice....

I don't believe he will play much at all this year... ever again.

I'll happily be wrong.

You heard it when he was like 2 months out of surgery last year...

It's been over a year for his shoulder, and 5 months for the biceps surgery, which I believe has a 3-4 month recovery period.

The circumstances around "what we've heard" could not be any more different this time around, because this time around he did not try to get back ASAP.

You made almost this same quote last year at this time. Brantley missed the whole year and had another much more involved surgery. I now expect him to have an appendage amputated.

Because, like this year, he was also hitting off the tee...which does mean he is/was close...last year he was hitting off a tee before playing in Spring games, and hitting off the tee before rehab games in Akron before making his season debut...not sure what you are trying to prove?

Also, while the details of his biceps surgery don't sound nice, its a surgery with a high full recovery rate.

Some blind optimism in there? Maybe. But acting like this go round of rehab was the same as last years is asinine, IMO...and people are doing that in here. I've literally been through the shoulder surgery he went through...twice! If I can recover it as a dumb college student doing dumb shit while still in the immobilizer, he can recover it as a professional.

The timelines alone are different, which makes a huge difference.

Way to be optimistic.

I'm not a doctor, but it's hard to see him every being able to swing a bat again given that he re-injured it last year.

Science.

Best thing for the Tribe to do is to go into the season thinking he won't be with us.

I heard you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so this is what I'm choosing to believe.

He'll be the best T-ball player there ever was in the history of childhood.

Best thing for us is to have him full go by the time Spring Training games roll around, which it sounds like he is approaching.

Then we can find out if he is/will remain healthy or not and adjust accordingly before the regular season starts.

The best thing to do would obviously be listening to medical professionals and not baseless speculation based on no evidence.

Close second though.

All this discussion about hitting off the tee...that is not the least bit unusual even for a player that is 100% healthy.

It's so easy to tell who has played competitive baseball at a remotely high level.

Whether the fans are optimistic or optimistic had zero bearing on whether Brantley comes back. What I do know is this surgery was to repair an injury he got while trying to rehab- which begs the question of whether the prior shoulder issues have really been solved. We saw already how a repaired shoulder can be good enough for a guy to function in spurts but be unable to sustain the day to day workload of swinging a bat (Travis Hafner). After 3 setbacks, a follow up surgery and a full year lost, I see no logical reason to make any real conclusions with Brantley other than taking it step by step and seeing what happens. I just hope this GM doesn't get caught flat footed with no options. I just don't see an OF of Naquin, Almonte and Chisenhall being the answer.
