2016-2017 Indians Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Meh. Jackson is ok. Would have rather brought back Davis or coco. I believe he'll get about 5M if he makes the team.

Probably the best roster since 95. If I was still living in NEohio I would not hesitate to get a season ticket package and split it.

Probably....but still nowhere near as good. Still, a very very good team.

I wonder if this signing has any indication of how Brantley's return is coming along?

If we could get 2010-2014 Austin Jackson that would be great! He's still only 29 years old. Batted .293 one year and .300 another while playing great defense. Hopefully he'll make the opening day roster if they sign him.

We won't...that guys long gone. And batting average means nothing. Guys OBP and SLG have taken massive nosedives since he left Detroit, as has his defensive metrics in CF, which is a bad pairing. Not to mention he isn't just a step slower, he's probably 3 or 4.

Biggest issue with this is he is a reverse split hitter, which we don't need. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'd rather play Almonte at this point than AJax.

It's a minor league deal with an out...has nothing to do with Brantley. Good insurance if Naquin's 2nd half issues at the plate continue into the Spring, as well as his defensive issues.

If he's in good shape, and has a bounce back year, Jackson's ability to play CF makes him a better fit on this roster than Crisp or Davis IMO

It's doubtful he does that though, which is why he was given a minor league deal. Almonte is better than all 3.

FWIW...Davis rated out as a much better defender in CF than Jackson did last year...and was very similar, albeit in less innings, the year before that as well.

Still, for the chance that he rebounds after a surgery, while costing only an invite to camp, we should all be for this move.

Agreed. Was on my phone, edited my initial post for more clarity.

Nonetheless Austin Jackson is a no risk signing at the end of the day. He is trying to get his career back on track so this is a make or break season for him. If he reclaims any of his former ability this is a great signing for us, if he doesn't, we didn't lose anything at all. This is a good move and I am sure they will do one or two more of these before spring training as well.

Inconsistent reverse split guy. In 2014-2015 he did better against lefties, before falling off the map against them in 2016 (limited ABs).

Is Almonte out of minor league options with the Tribe?

Indians get the tip of the cap once again.

This could be one of those Scott Kazmir type of signings, AJax could be a great story for the Tribe.

If all works out, is he a platoon with Naquin?

I did research this also awhile ago to double check and he does have an option. It's a guy like Aguilar who is out of options/likely to be cut for Jackson if he makes it out of spring training

It all depends on health and whatnot, but if Brantley is healthy than Naquin, Jackson and Almonte are competing with Zimmer and maybe Diaz for two outfield spots. Right now it will be Naquin against RH and Almonte against LH/Pinch Hitter in CF. Naquin even though he had a good rookie season can lose his CF spot if he has a bad spring/doesn't show he has made adjustments in his swing. Jackson is trying to make the roster and oust either Naquin or Almonte to the minors for a season. It is likely it will be Almonte who Jackson will replace, but we do not know as of right now.

IF Brantley for whatever reason cannot go, we will likely see Jackson kept/put on the 25 man roster for Brantley until he is healthy then a decision willl be made then about who is kept up between Naquin anf Almonte. I know not everyone agrees with me on Naquin's status, but he still has something to prove this season and hopefully he does.
