If they can convince him to play a lot of 3B, I can see them finding him ~250-300 ABs.

Reeks of Brantley insurance to me. I will worry until Brantley has 250-300 ABs under his belt this year.

If they wanted Brantley insurance, there are still very good OFs available in free agency who can be had for very cheap.

I don't think this is Brantley insurance, think its them trying to continue to play the market to improve the bench for the year.

Utley is a bench guy who will get at bats between 3B, 1st and 2nd (aka he will play on guys days off) when EE or Santana is off he will play at 1st when Brantley is off, then it will be him at 3rd and Kipnis is off him at 2nd, just the amount of playing time is eh, since these guys do not take off very many days. He will pinch hit a fair amount as well. That's what I see happening, he will play a few days a week and he could sign elsewhere and getting more ABs

Hence why you will see the Indians finalize their sprint training invites here soon as well. I actually do not see them bringing in very many guys this season to be honest, just a few veterans for depth/fill in AAA holes

Ironic because most Cubs fans I know enjoy filling A holes.
 
If Utley is looking for playing time, it doesn't make sense. But I think his attitude (which I fucking love - hard nosed) and experience would be great. Has also won a World Series and been to another. We lose that with Nap.

He might come here just for that reason and to win another one. I know Tito will find him ABs and I am sure he knows it to. So it makes sense but since we are going for it all again he will for sure will not hurt us.
