2016-2017 Indians Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think that the Indians will sign anyone else of major importance. Maybe just a couple of minor league contracts with spring training invites but no one impactful. Hence why I say if as in I don't believe they will spend the money to keep competing. They made their world series now time to make the playoffs again in 5 years.

Also as it sits their committed payroll is at 100M or more. While we would want them to sign Napoli or a replacement for his production there is no money. They are going to trot out the same team minus Nap and Rajai and tell us they are just as good.

Rajai they do not need to be sincere, but if the Indians do not go get a legit Right handed power bat, the fans will not come out this season since they do not trust ownership still (at least a fair amount of casual fans do not) They have to make at least one move to acquire a RH power bat since this lineup needs it. The way the cards are falling right now the Indians will get one of the RH bats in free agency since there is enough players for all the teams trying to get one of those guys. Now I am looking at Trumbo, Baustia, Encarnacion, Napoli then you have guys like Pedro Alvarez, Chris Carter who aren't as good. One of those guys will end up in Cleveland and my money is on Napoli on a compromised two year deal of some type.

This is a great example of a dumb take

At this point where is the money coming from to sign a first baseman with some pop? Also I know a few guys that are big on the Indians prospects and such and they think Brantley is done in the outfield because of the shoulder. There is your first baseman. So you also have a somewhat crowded outfield as well. Brantley is a guarenteed starter (even though I think he is done) that leaves you with Naquin, Guyer, Almonte, Chisenhal and Brantley (whether it is at 1st or OF Brantley is a starter and pencil him in somewhere)

You also have Giovanny Urshela who can play 3rd move Jram to first. You also have Erik Gonzalez, who is out of options I think, and he can play 3rd or first as well.

:chuckle: What are you talking about with Urshela to 3B and J-Ram to 1B? Not an option at all.

I'd love it if Brantley were our first baseman though, would open up a spot for us to sign a 3B or OF. However, the club has already said they don't plan on transitioning Brantley there yet, and the injury was to his non-throwing shoulder, so not sure how that would cause him to be "done" in the OF.

We'll certainly sign a position player to a major league contract before the off-season is over. I'm sorry, you feel the need to be so pessimistic about an organization that deserves nothing but optimism right now.

I have no qualms with moving Brantley to first since that would make way for a guy like Diaz to make the big league roster. We have enough money from the playoff run and the fact we don't have the Swisher and Bourn deals on the books anymore. So the space is there and I know the FO will do their best to get one of the guys in Cleveland. It makes no sense for the lineup to not have a power the bat in the fourth slot.

You put Napoli behind Lindor and in front of Brantley, it would make the lineup very solid. Otherwise it would be Lindor, Brantley then Ramirez. Now all great contact hitters but if Brantley isn't back up to his old self our season has sunk.

The organization has to make sure/try their best to win this season/next season while we have a strong core under team control. We aren't going to get a better chance than the next two seasons with the Twins rebuilding, the White Soxs rebuilding, the Royals will likely be fire selling this season, then Detroit is getting older/guys not being as productive. The Indians roster already is playoff bound so adding in a legit RH bat will make this team 1A/1B with Boston.

I think if we wind up with someone that it is Chris Carter as he is the cheapest option.

Me and D-Wreck agree on something any other argument is invalid lol

Honestly it will be Napoli since Napoli isn't getting the offers he was hoping for and he wants to be back in Cleveland so a compromise will be made somehow. Likely with a two year deal since that is middle grounds. I really do not mind since we have Brantley for two more season (team option in 2018) And we can find someone else to replace Santana/we can go a different way with the DH spot. 2017/2018 are years we can win the World Series, we have to go for it and in 2019 we have to replace some guys like Miller, Brantley anyways so these guys will have to be replaced probably in house, but we will be in contention then since Zimmer, Diaz, Allen will all be up on the major league roster in our OF which allows us to find a stopgap at another position that season

I actually completely disagree with this just because it would make no sense to cut our only 1st base on the 40 man roster outside of Santana and whoever we sign. We have 25 pitchers on the 40 man so to me Baker would make the most sense because we can likely get him through waivers since he hasn't pitched above A ball. 1st base for whatever reason is our weakest position in our farm system. I know it's not hard to find someone to play first base, but still cutting our only other player that is trained at first with right handed pop is not a smart move in my mind

They just added Baker, they aren't going to remove him already.

They also have Collabello on a minors deal who they'd add before Aguilar anyway.

He's going soon, it's just a matter of when.

Baker has been on the 40 man since last year. He wasn't put on this year. He hasn't played above A ball and he is a starting pitcher. I understand he has potential talent, but his track record says to me he could make it through waivers.

Collabello is also a guy who got in trouble for PEDs and I really do not think he is any better than Aguilar to be sincere. Also he is a lot older so I would rather keep the younger player who has options rather than the older player. Collabello also as an option to opt out June 1st if he is not on the major league roster and if he is by June 1st that means we didn't sign the veteran 1st baseman that I feel this team needs/we had injuries to our guys. He also hit poorly last season, while Aguilar actually finished the season hitting really well at AAA. I would rather have Aguilar

This is the kind of shit this section doesn't need...this is just bad all around...

Aguilar doesn't have any minor league options left. You're going to keep him on the big league roster all season?

Didn't think so.

Actually let me double check that one, I thought he had one more option year left to be honest so let me see when he was added to the 40 man roster since that is relevant in this argument lol

He definitely has 0 options left...I just looked at that and posted that in here like a week ago.

He makes no sense in our organization anymore, especially once they sign a MLB level 1B. Whoever they sign to fill that hole, I'm fairly sure it will be Aguilar eating the DFA to free up the 40 man spot.

So pretty much if we sign a 1st baseman he would tried to be outrighted to AAA or traded for cash while if we sign a pitcher it will be one of the other guys that we outright/move in a trade.

From the list that was posted, Crockett, Adams and Gonzalez are all out of options as well so it is likely Gonzalez makes the roster, Milner is a rule 5 so he has to or be offered back/make a deal with the Phillies, but Crockett and Adams are guys who make it or they get cut as well since they both used their last options last season by the list that was given

Gonzalez has 1 option left.

Next in line would be Adams after Aguilar, IMO.

Well according to the same list that says Aguilar doesn't have an option year left, it says Adams, Gonzalez and Crockett all are out of options as well since they were all optioned to the minor last season and the list says that they all had one last season. I don't doubt Gonzalez makes the team since it is his spot to lose.
