The trades themselves were good. The execution of the picks they acquired is what was bad.
They were still in position to acquire top tier talent even after the trade.
Draft position hasn't been what has killed us in previous trade downs, talent evaluation is.
Yeah, I don't have a lot of issue with the trades we've made to move back over the years. Usually they have been good deals. But good deals for picks tend to not matter if you blow the picks, which is what we've done.
To be fair, though, I think Erving still has a shot to be good. I've given up on Gilbert, though. You can coach a guy to be better, but you can't coach him to want to play football. The Gilbert pick was at least defensible at the time from a talent standpoint, but obviously the Browns didn't do enough work behind the scenes on that one.
I also don't think missing out on Watkins stings all that much. Julio is arguably the best receiver in football. There's a guy as good as or better than Watkins in every draft. It'd be nice if we drafted one some time.
