2017 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He can play some first base when the outfield heals up, I assume?

I am not sure but I think he can play there if really needed. I seen it before I think but he is actually a really good outfielder not sure if he still is at his age or after injury I did not watch him much this year.

Not sure why he would, not sure he's any more valuable than Santana to warrant having him put there.

He's putting up better numbers than Santana and Carlos isn't exactly a stellar defender. If Bruce is swinging it and the outfield is healthy and also producing, why not? It's an option.

Carlos Santana actually hasn't been bad at 1st base this season if you look at his numbers there. I am not sure if I would trust Bruce at 1st over him.

Jay Bruce has, historically, always slumped off in the second half of the season. This year is no exception.

OPS 1st Half:
Santana: .749
Bruce: .842

OPS 2nd Half:
Santana: .895
Bruce: .725

Santana is a better defensive first baseman than Bruce. Santana is a better hitter than Bruce. Santana is a clubhouse leader who has been with this team for a long time, unlike Bruce. Santana sees more pitches per at bat, which I think is a crucial stat for this team's success.

I love the Bruce pickup for how little we gave up, but let's not pretend we're getting some stud.

The OF depth has taken a beating and they aren't scoring runs. Bring this dude in and hopefully he can produce at the plate a bit.
I like the proactive move without giving up much of anything.

If this means we see less of Almonte in the outfield then that's a good thing. With all the injuries we're a little thin out there with a lot of games to play in August.

Thinking out loud... when everyone is healthy, do the Indians go with 6 outfielders in the playoffs?

v. LHP
LF: Brantley, CF: Jackson, RF: Guyer
Bench: Chisenhall, Bruce, Zimmer

v. RHP
LF: Brantley, CF: Chisenhall, RF: Bruce
Jackson, Guyer, Zimmer

Add in Perez and one infielder to the bench and that would mean an 11-man pitching staff.

Zimmer is the CF.

Interesting.

So when everyone's healthy, who gets squeezed? Chisenhall and Jackson have produced in their splits well enough to continue to play it would seem.

I guess in the end it's a good problem to have.

Jackson likely gets in against lefties in center, Guyer in right.

If it were me, I'd go with a fully healthy set-up of:

LF - Brantley
CF - Zimmer
RF - Chisenhall

Bench/PH - Bruce, Jackson, Guyer

Really, they should just ride the hot hand between Bruce and Chisenhall.

Bruce has hit right-handed pitching really well this year to the tune of an .871 OPS with a HR every 14 at bats. It's hard for me to envision a scenario where he isn't playing full time against RHP factoring in the power advantage he has.

That said, Brantley and especially Chisenhall have mashed righties all year long as well.

Then you factor in Zimmer who is the best defender and runner of the bunch. He should probably should play on defense alone and it's not like he can't hit RHP either.

I guess it boils down to would you rather have 3-4 Bruce/Chisenhall at bats against a RHP or 6-7 innings of Zimmer defense in a given game instead of 2 as a late inning sub.

How does this play out now? All of a sudden we're loaded at OF.

Brantley, Chisenhall, Zimmer, Guyer, Jackson, Bruce? We love all those guys, who's out?

Bruce could also factor in at DH, but then you have to move EE to 1B which isn't ideal
