2017 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is Watson good enough to pass on the potential to build a great defense in a strong defensive draft. Can you answer that question? There is a strong QB class next year.

If I could answer that question, I’d be making a lot more money and doing way less work.

The “defense or die” mantra is a really old school line of thinking, that is rooted in some deeper aspects of psychology. Super Bowl champs are pretty evenly split in terms of ranking in the top of the those team metrics. They even look at this with a much larger cross section of data (with similar results)

That article pretty much states the way you build your team is mainly personal preference. There isn’t a right or a wrong way. The choice is likely more an organizational philosophy on which route makes the most sense. So we hired an offensive coach who has a track record of developing QB's.....so which choice potentially makes more sense? As long as the FO is on the same page I don't have a problem with either route.

There is a strong QB class next year.

This is no more than a guess though. This QB class looked pretty good 12 months ago. A lot can change over that period of time. You also have to consider the likelihood of draft positioning repeating itself. It’s really hard to get in a position to take a QB. How many times have the Browns flushed draft position by just winning 1 too many games?

I’m not advocating taking one guy over the other, I’m just trying to open the dialog a bit here. There’s a handful of people who seem to have absolute opinions on how this whole thing works when there are several approaches (that can be very different in philosophy), that are still effective.

Another perspective, just because.

Mort & Schefter's divisional-round notebook: Deshaun Watson's draft value has soared

From the article:

"Here's what you have with Deshaun Watson," one personnel director said. "He was the first pick in the draft in all mocks a year ago. He struggled some in midseason, so everyone got off him. But these last couple of weeks, he's skyrocketing up to the top 10 picks, with the two playoff game wins. Now people are going to say, 'Wait a minutes, he's played Alabama the past couple of years really well, he won a national championship, he can be a Mariota, he can be a [Dak] Prescott, great character, great kid.' People will not want to miss him. I think he's definitely going in the top 10."

Here was a really nice tidbit I saw from that article:

Another personnel man predicted Watson will draw Cleveland's interest, even though many believe the Browns are focusing in on Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett. "The head coach will like him," the personnel director said of Browns coach Hue Jackson. "You can see that. He wanted to bring RG3 over -- this is a much better player than RG3, and RG3 went second in the draft."

Here's proof why he might not be a first rounder in the mock drafter draft:

It's just a bit...suspicious when that guy says "I haven't talked to one team that has a first round grade on [Watkins]", but doesn't tell you how many teams he's talked to. For all we know, you could stick a period after "team", and have the truth.

Jeremiah has plenty of connections. Not sure why you guys are trying to discredit him.

DJ is definitely a good analyst.

But him saying he hasn't talked to anyone with the first round grade doesn't mean others who've talked to people disagree.

There's a million sources out there.

I don't care what anybody says about this but I will always be skeptical of any analyst, talking head, "football guy", or whoever was riding the Johnny Manziel wave. I will never forget that shit. You can present all kinds of great material and make all the points you want, I'm still going to hold that against you.

Seriously, what I don't like is that all of links to his previous year mocks are broken (might be NFL.com policy, but still). Readers should be able to go back and evaluate what these experts say in order to assess credibility.

He said Manziel appears to be "their guy". Which..he was. Woah! Go check some 2014 mocks. Many people had Manziel going even higher than he ended up being picked. So you should be skeptical of about everybody.
