2017 Spring Training Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Crazy how small he is in person. That home run he hit was dead center and must have been 475 feet.

I thought it wasn't going out and it just carried. Sat right next to the Indians dug out today.

Also Willie Mo Pena is a very large human being.

I sat in 113 yesterday. Completely forgot you were going.

I've never, in person, seen a bomb like Mejia's. It was questionably a no doubter that hit about half way up the batters eye which hovers over a wall that's 410.

Also, Willie Mo needs to make the team simply because I was dying of laughter. Him playing catch with Stinky P was insane. Looked like he could knock him off his feet.

Lol Sandy is telling the truth there. My best piece by him is a 1997 All star ball signed.

I got the ball during that season in batting practice.

One year I look to spend a couple thousand and take a week trip to Arizona for ST. A friend of mine did and the Indians really take care of you if they hear you're visiting from Cleveland. Dude's kid and him got everything from batting gloves, balls, bats, cleats lol, players give it away at the end.

It sounds really fun.

Talked briefly with Tyler, although he accidently missed signing my son's baseball, lots of hands out, he was looking for kids and my son is only 9, wasnt intentional, but he was very nice.

Greg Allen is very fast, very.

Kluber in person is a special pitcher, just crazy movement, my seats were very close so i could see it., (as close as you can get to 3rd base, probably only 10 feet away, i was at the rail)

When Kluber left in the 4th, the entire Indians Section went crazy for him. To say he is loved is an under statement.

Mejia is better than thought. You have to see it in person, but his bat is crazy live. He really might be something at the next level.

Zimmer did not like Weaver. Was fooled by him and looked out of place, but Weaver is a very good pitcher.

Was not impressed with Chisenhall's fielding. Didnt get good jumps. Guy next to me is an uber fan, and commented he was even worse at 3rd. Not good, but he does have a pop in his bat and i get why he is up here.

Almonte is a good all around baseball player. Plays his position well. Very sound. Think he will be a nice depth guy if we have him all year.

Francona while jogging by was nice to us. Son asked for his signature and he was late he said, i responded you just took us to the world series you will not be fired if you show up late for one day on the job. He laughed but still didnt sign.

Sandy Jr wouldnt sign. He said that he signed for 20 years and if you dont have his signature by now, you didnt try hard enough.

My son got another baseball, they really do love the kids at these games, crowd and players and try to go out of their way for the kids, its nice to see.

And finally after 15 years of living here you think i would know this, but Phoenix is literally just a few feet from the surface of the son.

Mejia caught a bit...you didn't catch his throws to 2nd in between innings?

And I think I said this to you last year, but fielding fly balls in Arizona is probably the hardest thing to do as an outfielder...you just have no background to track the ball fully...shit is awful. If you can get good jumps in Arizona in the OF, you are special.

Shit, you saw a 2B camp under a pop up yesterday, only for it to drop 15 feet behind him for a hit.

Also, the interactions are the best thing about Spring Training. You can't do that shit in the regular season, cause they just aren't available. Even though you didn't get signatures from the 3, the experience is still awesome.

Mejia's throws looked solid. There was a play on a tipped third strike where he almost caught it barehand. He has weird mechanics to throw base runners out. It looks labored just in the routine throw down.

It is fun, I told Tyler that I hope you continue your production into arbitration and he laughed and said no doubt.

There were no clouds, so i get its tough, but he is for sure not a good fielder, but no big deal.

And no, i didnt catch his throws to 2nd, i know Mejia is known for his arm, but too much going on between innings with the son and others that i didnt notice.

Spring training is fun. Last years was still the best between my son and Lucroy when he was still with the Brewers.

Basically he was 5 feet from us, asked my son if he wanted "Lucroys autograph". He looked at his indians shirt, then looked at Lucroy wearing a Brewer uniform and said "Naaaa"

Lucroy turned to me laughing and said "really?"

I laughed back and responded "Boy has to have his morals," and left.

I would be more in line to agree with you that Lonnie is not a good defensive OF if the numbers suggested he was a poor defensive player out there...they don't. He's not pretty to watch, but he gets the job done. Saves a lot of runs out there too, believe it or not. Much better in RF compared to 3B.

And I would like to think your son's interaction with Lucroy was fresh on his mind when he was making the decision on his no-trade clause when we had a trade lined up for him.

And for that, thank your son for me. We have Mejia, Allen, and Chang still thanks to him, and we proved we didn't need him to make it deep into the postseason.

I am sure Lucroy did not factor the interaction in, and it is funnier because of how things worked out between him and the indians, but trust me, it was funny on its own Merritt.

And the guy next to me assured me Lonnie was a much worse 3rd basemen than outfielder too. Said he could get to the ball, just couldnt make the throw, which is kind of important.

Oh yeah...numbers even backup the RF > 3B argument, by an absurdly wide margin too.

-14.5 UZR, -5 DRS, -5.9 range runs saved, -8.3 error runs saved at 3B...those are awful, awful numbers.

So far in RF?

6.7 UZR, 14 DRS, 6.4 range runs saved, 0.5 error runs saved...took a bit of a step backwards last year, some of which I think was from missing a bunch of time in the Spring and early in the regular season, since he's relatively new to the position, but even then he wasn't a train wreck like he was at 3B...pretty average in RF defensively last season.

But yeah, I'm sure you were laughing at the Lucroy situation when looking back on your lone interaction with him.

Lucroy was actually very nice in my interaction, laughing a bit since I had one, but he was amused by my son for sure and respectful to the other fans.

I have had lots of interaction with football and basketball players, but not many with baseball. What i do know about professional athletes is it can be hard to live life in the fish bowl they have to live, even with all of the fantastic perks.

Many of us hate the athlete that is all about the future and money, but financial Lucroy was probably correct that coming here was the wrong move. Sad, but sports is a business too.

We can debate the defensive numbers on Lonnie all day, but in the end i wont win because its not my area of expertise by any means. I just watch a few plays out there and he for sure was not comfortable.

Well I think so far Armstrong is winning the last spot in the bullpen. Still a long ways to go, but he is looking good out there.

Honestly I am so glad Lucroy vetoed that trade, that could have ended up like the Colon trade we had years ago. To me Meija, Allen, Armstrong will all be in the pros. I think Chang will end up being moved, but he has a good enough ceiling to make it as well. Also if we did get Lucroy we may have not made the deal for Encarnacion.

Hopefully there is more games with video so I can sit and watch the guys, especially the minor league guys. I don't get much of a chance to watch film on those guys.

Though I think the Stamets flip to second base was kind of funny since the SS wasn't expecting that type of pace on the ball. We have guys who can really field up the middle in Gonzalez and Stamets. My opinion I'd rather have Gonzalez over Ronny and Martinez, since I like a guy off the bench who can field. Ronny may have a slightly better bat than Gonzalez but lacks defensive ability that Gonzalez has and Martinez is not as good as Gonzalez in anything.

And here is where it becomes concerning.

Tomlin gave up a quick 5 runs in the top of the 1st (2 2-run HRs).
