2018 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's just gonna be the same thing as last year.

This one awful OSU loss is gonna mean the SEC gets two teams in before OSU gets in.

If LSU beats Alabama next week, it's curtains.

Alabama will get in over OSU and then whoever wins the SEC between LSU and Kentucky/Georgia.

If ND stays undefeated, I would imagine Michigan would get in over 11-1 Bama.......I just don't see how you would compare resumes and push Alabama through but what do I know. I think Bama is the better team but a loss to LSU would make their 11-1 resume terrible. Their best win is TXA&M and they just lost to 4-3 MSU by two TD's. Their out of conference slate was Louisville, Arkansas State, ULL and Citadel. I mean, just stop caring about SOS and resume if that gets you in.

OSU's loss is an easy out to allow Bama to get in again as a non-conference champ but the committee would really be doing some mental gymnastics to bypass Michigan at 12-1, with their lone loss by 7, on the road @ #2 ND.....with convincing wins over Wisconsin, @MSU and then whatever the results of PSU, OSU are. Then Michigan is probably rooting for Iowa to run the table for resume purposes....as a 10-2 Iowa (#19) would be in the low teens, ranking wise. I would expect Michigan will have, at worst, 3 teams on their schedule in the top 25, maybe 4 and post a 2-1 or 3-1 record against them (in this scenario)....their loss being to a top 2 team on the road, in a game where they had the ball late to tie.

I really think if Clemson, ND, LSU and Michigan all win out, Bama will not get in. Bama's formula, for getting in as a 1 loss non conference champ, is OSU winning the Big Ten. If Michigan wins the BIG at 12-1, Bama needs help to get in if they lose to LSU. Michigan has a far superior SOS and will have better resume wins and the best loss.

Either way, everyone outside of the SEC should be pulling for Bama to win out at this point.

If Bama eliminates the other SEC teams, the only other team out there to threaten the B1G Champ is Oklahoma. I have no doubt Michigan would get in over Oklahoma. Ohio State, however...probably needs Oklahoma to drop another game.

First CFP rankings tonight. What I'll be looking for is where Michigan, Ohio State, and Oklahoma are ranked. Right now it's looking like the #4 spot will come down to those 3 teams.

In the interest of winning a national title, my hope is Bama loses to LSU. :chuckle:

Michigan controls their own destiny, given their resume loss and remaining schedule. A CFP field, minus Bama, is one they have a chance of winning....so, at this point, I'm rooting for that.

Interesting, but I understand it. I'd just be scared they'd still put Bama in just cuz.

A loss to LSU gives them a resume of:

Conference title: None
Top 25 wins: Maybe 2 home wins? (TXA&M, Auburn seem like the only possibilities)
Non Con: Louisville, Arkansas State, ULL and Citadel

Just stop playing if that gets you in over a team that lost @ #2 ND by a TD, won @ #6-8 OSU....in addition to wins over teams like Wisconsins, PSU, Iowa....that will all likely finish in the top 25.

Anyone that has a good enough resume to get in over 11-1 Bama should be actively rooting against them. The CFP field is wide open if Alabama is not in it.

Does one-loss Ohio State with a win over Michigan and a B1G Championship (against Iowa/NW/Wisky remember), get in over 11-1 Alabama with no conference championship?

I still feel like they should, but I have no faith in the committee to leave Alabama out if it is even kind of close, so I'm rooting for Bama to just win out and eliminate the rest of the SEC.

Really need Notre Dame to drop a game to get them outta here:
11/3: vs. Northwestern
11/10: vs. Florida State
11/17: vs. #22 Syracuse
11/24: @ USC

I think N'Western and Syracuse could both have a chance if they play well, but those are both home games for the Irish. USC and Florida St. both suck ass this year, so doubt we'd get any help from them.

I don't think so.

I think a 1 loss Notre Dame easily gets in over us, unless they also lose by 30 to a shitty team.

I've honestly given up on hoping Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame lose. Because they'd all have to lose twice for us to get in over them and that's not happening. Hoping Bama kills the SEC and that Oklahoma drops another game. That is our path. I don't see us jumping anyone.

You can't lose to shitty teams by 30 fucking points and get the benefit of the doubt.

I mean, I obviously agree with your logic here.

I doubt it. I'm just not sure how you get around Purdue blowing their doors off.

OSU would have a better win (Michigan) but it's just really tough to reconcile losing by 29 to a team like Purdue. If Alabama got killed by LSU, then sure......if it was a close road loss, I doubt the committee puts OSU in over them.

I think a 1 loss ND team gets in over any likely BIG winner, assuming it is a close loss. They beat Michigan head to head and their resume would be similar to OSU (minus the Purdue loss).

Maryland...wut r u doing

It's a really tough situation for them. After the investigation, it sounds like the athletic training staff failed McNair......didn't properly diagnose his condition, nor administer treatment.

I'm not necessarily saying Durkin should have been retained but if fault was placed more on medical staff and Durkin was operating in the bounds of what people deemed to be acceptable, you're just in a no win situation.

If you retain him, players / public are possibly mad.......if you fire him without cause, depending on how his contract is written, the university could then head in to a lawsuit.

The whole situation is depressing.

"That group surveyed 94 Maryland players on Sept. 9 and asked about Durkin’s effectiveness. In a comparison that included results from 28 other schools, players rated him lower than the head coach from all but one other program."

So who was that coach? Guesses?

Players already walked out of his first meeting back.

It's a mess.

The 1st CFP Rankings of the season are out:
  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. LSU
  4. Notre Dame
  5. Michigan
  6. Georgia
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Washington State
  9. Kentucky
  10. Ohio State
  11. Florida
  12. UCF
  13. West Virginia
  14. Penn State
  15. Utah
  16. Iowa
  17. Texas
  18. Mississippi State
  19. Syracuse
  20. Texas A&M
  21. NC State
  22. Boston College
  23. Fresno State
  24. Iowa State
  25. Virginia
I knew those pricks were going to throw LSU in the top-3, so now if Alabama beats them in a score like... 34-28, they'll drop LSU to like fifth and then include them in the last go-around and leave out the B1G winner.

Need Alabama to beat LSU into the ground badly. Need Oklahoma to lose as well. Kentucky will most likely go down to Georgia this week, so they'll be gone. Washington State would never get in over Ohio State if it came down to it, so I'm not worried about them.

It's not looking good boys. Just rooting for us to win out, ruin Michigan's chances, win the B1G Championship, and see where the bowl season takes us. I don't think we're good enough to hang with Alabama or LSU anyways.

11-1 Bama not getting in over 12-1 B1G champ

They barely made it over Osu last year.
