2018 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The one real weak spot on in the secondary, in my opinion, is Jamar Taylor, and its a glaring weak spot. Yeah Peppers is playing out of position and yeah he did muff 2 punts last week, but I think he's been largely fine at FS outside of a few games earlier in the season. Doesn't mean I'm against me some Minkah Fitzpatrick though, as he'll be elite at FS (or anywhere you put him) and allow Peppers to go to his more natural SS/hybrid role.;

Got to keep in mind we did draft Howard Wilson this year, who some media/scouts have said he would have been a 1st round this year if he waited. Jason McCourty has been a pro's pro. I think he is on a 1 year deal and I'd like to see them at least give him another to give us some depth/young guys time to develop. I'm all for drafting a CB...ideally at the top of round 2, assuming taking one would be a reach at the Texans pick. I love Ward. I also love me some Josh Jackson out of Iowa.

Rosen
Fitzpatrick
Ward
Guice

Who says no?

Would be a great draft but Guice won't be available past #15 once combine is done.

I'm still more impartial to Darnold than Rosen, if Darnold declares. Give me the plumbers kid who hasn't been handed everything. I really think Darnold will develop into a great QB. He's left a lot to be desired with his turnovers this year, but I also think he's been hurt by his WR talent. The loss of JuJu took away all their explosion at the position.

Assuming Guice and Barkley are gone by #15, I wouldn't mind Damien Harris or Nick Chubb in the second.

We've also gotta find some WR talent in this draft. Not sure taking a flyer in the first round is worth it this year though. I'm still pretty high on Simmie Cobbs and he's likely available into mid to late second round.

Rosen and a wr early is a must. You can not rely on Josh Gordon staying clean and Coleman staying healthy. If it happens great, but you have to prepare like they are question marks. Cut Britt, sign a vet wr and draft one high and one later on in the mid round rounds like Braxton berrios.

Ward isn't a guy you trade up for. Minka and Derwin are. Ward is good but he's just not in their tier.

It depends how far the trade would be, IMO. I think Ward is a true junior, so he's not very old. Having the 5th year option is worth it if, say, they do something like they did when they picked Njoku.

I think I would much rather drop $ on a top-tier FA WR & a mid-WR guy than draft one 1st round. Depending where the HOU pick ends up in the 1st, guys like Ridley, Sutton, or Washington may make sense. But if we end up anywhere from 9-15, I think it would make sense to go Guice, Evans, or James.

As far as UFA WR's, I would throw $ at (in no order - including both big $ and mid):

Alshon
A ROb
Davante Adams (my top wish)
Paul Richardson
Marquise Lee

I believe McCourty is on a two year deal

I don't think Ward is a better prospect than Eli Apple was and NYG reached for Apple with that pick. Ward is a mid 20's early 2nd round pick at best. The only thing he may benefit from is this draft not being very deep at CB but he's not the caliber player you trade back into the 1st round for after making two picks. Basically he's not the caliber of player that Njoku is that warrants that trade up. He very well could fall to our 2nd round pick like Kevin King did.

On the running backs, the last few years have had some good talents found in rounds 2-5, at least 1 pro bowler every year but 2 this decade, and 7 total pro bowlers in the 7 years through 2016, with Kareem Hunt well on his way, and Dalvin Cook looking good until his torn ACL.

I'm pleased to see that at least the RB class is looking as good and for that reason would not spend one of the first 2 picks on one unless we landed Cousins or some nonsense like that. It's infuriating to me that after 2 years at the top of the draft we have 2 glaring needs with no blue chip prospects to fill them. I don't really like any of these quarterbacks at #1.... You want to get the best DB, WR, and RB in the draft? You could do it if you punt on these quarterbacks.. .but of course they'll burn the stadium down if they do that again.

Anyway here's a visual of value per round of running backs vs quarterbacks.

Lazy comparison. Kevin king played slow in college, had questionable hip turn, and still ended up a top 33 pick. Ward is almost the exact opposite in terms of game speed. If Ward runs in the 4.4 range he'll be a top 20 pick. I'd rather Fitzpatrick or James, but he's easily #3 in terms of DBs who we should target. If the other two are gone, I'd have no problem taking him at 11.

Eli apple was over drafted though. I definitely think Ward is a better prospect. If he had a bit more height we'd be talking about him being the next Lattimore.

How is player value measured?

Ward is definitely better than Apple. Apple just had the size.

No way Ward is available in the 2nd round. If he falls past the teens I'd be stunned.

How is player value measured?
Uses pro-football-reference.com's "AV" (added value) stat as a base plus my own sauce to provide some balance for longevity. Basically it's the AV per season played, with bonuses for Pro Bowl and All-Pro nominations to give long-term success a boost. It's by no means a perfect stat but it gets the job done quickly because it uses readily available and downloadable data. It will underrate players who took longer to get started (Cousins) or had long tail ends of careers where they were kind of mediocre. The general cut off for quality is 10, but with running backs splitting carries so much these days it's getting harder to put up great numbers. There are some good backs clocking in below 10 but if you are a QB below 10 your team is looking to replace you.

I just don’t see how folks could come away from Saturday’s game and not feel Rosen is just a better talent ?

And he literally is playing with nothing around him...

I'm warming up to Rosen. During the offseason, I thought he was all hype. His tape was of a below average prospect with scouts over-promising his tools. UCLA switched to an offensive coordinator who came from Steve Spurrier's coaching tree at the college level, then Brian Billick's tree at the pro level. Fisch is merging a lot of pro style plays into wide open shotgun plays.

If you are judging Rosen off 2016 not 2017, know he is a more polished prospect. He has grown a lot, despite occasionally trying to win it all on one throw. He is overconfident when his team gets down, but that is to be expected from a junior in college.
