2018 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He's said that indirectly and I'm pretty sure he'd say it directly if he were asked (which he will be at the Combine). I've already mentally moved on from him, I just hope we can get something from the Giants if we're prepared to hand him to them.

This is, quite frankly, not true at all.

You don't simply "move on" from the best QB prospect because you've read too much into an indirect quote.

That would be asinine.

Quite frankly, if you don't think Rosen would say that directly when asked, you don't know Rosen's personality.

And the exact quote from Rosen is "I'd rather be a lower pick at the right team than a higher at the wrong team." That was said when we had locked up the #1 pick.

Go ahead and spin that however you want so you can keep the dream of him on the Browns alive. I'm pretty sure there's an easier way to interpret it and that's what I'm doing.

This has absolutely nothing to do with any of the criticisms that have been thrown his way. Well, unless winning percentage was one of them, but some people are calling that a strength of his.

He had a horrible team, so yeah some of his stats aren't going to be good cause of it. If he had the team from his junior season roll over again to his senior year, he would have had a lot better of stats since his best offensive weapons and his OLine left.

I am not saying he doesn't have issues, but everyone has issues out of college for the most part. The ability for him to be a good pro is there, the question is will he have the type of coach and system that helps him mature as a QB or mess up his career. I feel he has a higher ceiling than anyone but needs more time to sit and in some ways than anyone else in the draft. He knows pro style of offenses, but the speed adjustment will take him some time. I wouldn't draft him at 1 but I do like him as a prospect and his potential.

@AZ_ I don't doubt that Rosen will try to pull an Eli Manning on us if we draft him. I also just don't trust Rosen to actually stay healthy either. I know you don't care about the concussions thing as much, but concussion issues plus a lot of various other injuries, makes me say Rosen is the best on paper, but also a high risk prospect as well.

If the Browns were picking in the mid-teens, I think this would be a better possibility.

But Rosen is the most polished, NFL-ready QB since Andrew Luck at 21 years old.

It's really a no brainer in the same way Myles Garrett was last year.

The only way that changes is if he says he won't play in Cleveland.

I feel like you said the same thing about Goff when he was coming out too.

So why don't we wait until he does say that before speaking in such absolutes?

There are plenty of QBs who probably want to me picked as high as possible from a competitive standpoint, but I'm sure they also realize they'd be better off going lower in the draft where the teams are better/more established.

Saying "I'd rather play for Team X than Cleveland" is so much different than "I won't play for Cleveland". No one wants to play for the Browns.

Draft Josh Allen, but also trade for Alex Smith and offer him a contract extension to be the starter for at least the next 2 seasons?

Not what I’d do, but just thinking out loud here.
If they choose to do that, I don't hate it. Alex Smith makes sense as a 2 year starter with a potential for a 3rd year (Age 37 in that season).

The issue is that you absolutely do not take Allen at #1 to sit him that long. You would already have Smith on board by draft time, ideally, thus the immediate pressure to find a workable QB is alleviated slightly.

The smart move, then, would be to take BPA at both 1 and 4, or trade out of one for a ransom with someone looking to come up for Rosen.

It's really about Allen falling, because I wouldn't take him in the Top 7-8 picks of this draft.

You theoretically could couple #33 and the Eagles 2nd to get up to around 18-20 if he's still there and you decide to pounce. But even still, with the amount of work he needs and the picks we happen to be holding in the draft, I don't see a way that he ends up here unless he falls and we already have the vet QB on our roster.

Matthew Stafford was at 57%, Drew Bledsoe was 54%. Both I think would be pretty good comps for Allen.

Big arm plus good coaching can turn that into a winner.

Will it? Depends on where he ends up.

Stafford improved every year and finished above 60% at 61.4 his final year. Allen was 56% both years he played.

Bledsoe proves my point, career 57% in the NFL, that wont cut it today. Besides i believe he lost his starting job to a 6th round pick.

I personally dont like Allen, i dont debate you allot on this stuff, you do know your stuff, but its very difficult to come up with a successful QB in the NFL who never completed over 60% at least one year in college.

Ryan Leaf didn't bust because he was inaccurate, he busted because he had a lousy work ethic (which didn't let him improve) and didn't have the right personality handle adversity. He's said all that himself in interviews. Now think of Peyton Manning.

By all accounts Josh Allen is a really good kid who busts his ass. It's the reason he fought back from a shoulder injury to play in some second rate bowl game while other players would've sat out. Evaluating the person is a BIG part of QB evaluation. It can't just be stats.

Ryan Leaf is a bad example, he was an asshole, but find me a successful NFL QB that didnt complete at least 60% in college atleast 1 year, its hard to find. Bledsoe is the closest, and he was career below 60% in the NFL, doesnt work today imo.

Accuracy matters, it doesnt go up much in the NFL from college.

Look, time will tell, i am the guy that told Drew Brees he wouldn't be a very good QB in he NFL, and i do mortgages for a living, not evaluate NFL talent, but looking at the numbers it is almost impossible to succeed in the NFL if you are inaccurate in college.

I feel like you said the same thing about Goff when he was coming out too.

Personally i loved Goff coming out, I will also admit i was very iffy on Wentz. So to my dislike of Josh Allen i will say i am not always right, but doing a ton of research and i still think the 60% completion is a major thing for college qb's. Might seem arbitrary, but find me the exception. Closest is Drew Bledsoe so far, and he was an inaccurate pro.

Yeah and Goff was pretty damn good this year

What happened to Goff is going to be more and more common: Excellent quarterback traits will get a player drafted high, but if their college system was very different than a pro system they should start the year as second string. This is more of a result of diverging offenses from college to pros than the player, even if the QB was drafted in the top half of the first round.

Agreed. Rosen ran much more of a pro-like system than Goff did. Which probably has a lot to do with @AZ_ 's statement, which I agree with.

Pretty obvious we have to move up from 1 of our 2nds to get UGA RB Michel. He looked incredible against all of Alabama's future NFL players. Get that extra year of his contract. Play him along with Duke behind that good O-Line, with a respectable bridge QB and a non-suspended Gordon, 2nd year Njoku, healthy Coleman, and watch the team win some damn games.
