2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Bamba has to be atleast 7'... no way he is 6'11 lol.

Ran a simple regression to calculate everyone's "adjusted" height based on standing reach, which found that Bamba's really the size of a typical 7'2" player. Wouldn't be surprised if he's grown another inch since he was measured, too.

Do you think he might struggle to rebound similar to Porzingis in terms of maintaining rebounding position, having high center of gravity and generally getting pushed around? I'm really impressed by his rebounding ability and how he just rebounds over people routinely, but then I look at Porzingis and the fact that they have similar build in terms limbs length(high center of gravity) and leg girth(Bamba's has a much much wider upper body and much higher level of muscle fibres) and his struggles to rebound the ball so that kinda makes me wonder how it's going to translate. Really too bad that we don't have Porzingis College numbers to compare.

Another thing with Bamba is that I don't love his transition defence. Doesn't hustle getting back, always on the same speed as far as running goes. Have you ever seen him sprint?

Also, I know that you really can't screen properly in college, but i'd like him to show better screening. He doesn't have good angles, doesn't roll well enough still after a screen and is too upright and that makes him a much smaller as a screener and as a result really lowers Texas PnR game ceiling.

Like when I look at Jackson you see him stick his legs and body a bit when he screens, he leans and bends, he sets more off-ball screens and generally understands the game on a much higher level. The fact he does all the little things and comes from MSU really makes me hopeful that he is going to be impactful in the first year and do the little things that Draymond Green does, but on a much higher level.

I know that that refs are too whistle happy in College, but despite Jaren Jackson's foul problems he still does it much better.

Well, we do have ACB/Eurocup numbers for Porzingis. He averaged about 8 boards per 40 in a sample size of 1500 minutes or so over there. That's pretty terrible for an aspiring center...for comparison, Zizic averaged 12 boards/40 against tougher Euroleague competition, and Doncic's averaging around 9 boards/40 against ACB/Euroleague competition this year. So it wasn't a case of Porzingis's rebounding failing to translate to the NBA, he was just always a bad rebounder.

EDIT: of course I still have Jackson well above Bamba on my board, just to be clear. Bamba making a serious case to be the second best big in the draft, though.

Bamba is still my pick, though it doesn't seem he has the fire that Embiid did. He also needs to box out. Dude seems to be coasting on the boards thanks to his height.

However, that cross court pass out of the double was right on the money and almost made me yelp from excitement.

6 assists in Bamba's last 5 games...which doesn't sound like much, but before that stretch he had just 3 assists in his last 15 games. Helping his statistical projection a lot, as that was the biggest red flag on his resume.

Not gonna lie, I haven't spent a TON of time in this thread because I honestly expected us to move this pick at the deadline. I really respect the active posters as they've given me a great amount of insight as I catch up on the ins and outs of these prospects.

I know it's been said before, but us struggling so much IMO further enticed the front office to keep the pick as insurance. After watching these moves at the deadline play out, it was a blessing in disguise that we struggled so much forcing us to A) keep the pick as LeBron insurance B) make major moves.

We pulled off both and I've never been more excited for an all star break to get over to watch our team, and I'm so fucking excited to add a major piece in June.

My emotions are night and day from a month ago.

Following the Nets and the other shit teams has made the regular season much more tolerable to me. Having a high draft pick is alot of fun lol

I don't think they were opposed to moving the pick at all... there was just nobody even available that was equal or greater value of the pick.

Ugly, ugly game from Trae Young. Kerwin Roach is definitely the most athletic guy that Young will face all year, right? Because Young has looked completely physically overmatched against him on both ends for two games now with 14-43 shooting with 5-22 from 3. Texas also seems to run a lot of offense to get Young switched out onto Roach which seems to have worked pretty well.

I hope so because we need his stock to rise. He just has problems when athletic defenders front him and face guard him. He struggles to get open and it throws off his game.

It doesn't really bode well for him because he is going to see some freak athletes in the nba.

Real Madrid has managed 16 points (9 of which came from the foul line) in 13 minutes with Doncic on the bench so far today, compared to 34 points in 14 minutes with him on the court.

One possession late in the game was really telling for me. Young got a step on Roach and got into the lane, but Roach was able to recover, then jumped up and blocked the floater attempt right out of Young's hand and started a fast break the other way. To be fair Roach is a pretty insane athlete, but it's still not a good sign for Young.

Yeah.. he usually get more separation and is able to get to the heart of the defense... against roach he just couldn't shake him off. He has always looked quick and shifty to me, but today he just looked slow.

I'd still say he looked shifty today. He had that one impressive move where he faked a dribble to the wing, then reversed baseline and shook Roach completely. It's just that the threat of Bamba at the rim took away some attack angles while Roach's athleticism advantage allowed him to recover on plays he was beat.

Texas is about as good as it gets in college defense with the Roach and Bamba combo, but Young's efficiency has been slowly rolling downhill ever since conference play started. I just can't justify taking him over everyone else mentioned in the top 8.
