2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I have to disagree strongly. I think Izzo is an excellent game coach. The players simply didn't execute. Passes were errant, they were loose with their dribble, and most of all, they just couldn't put the ball in the basket.

17-66 from the floor and 8-37 behind the arc, there's your game.

I thought he had terrible personnel combos in all game and was running terrible actions. There was nothing to execute. The dude has a couple good zone busting options to put in the middle and he didn't go to it at all. There's ways to scheme easy entry passes into the middle of a zone which collapses the defense. I just saw Izzo basically trying to get them to simply power through the zone which doesn't work. You have to move it around and force rotation from the weakside help.

They were tough tough shots though. Wasn't enough ball and body movement. They didn't attack the heart of the zone and Jackson was out of position on offense all game.

He put a guy in the middle of the zone, which is the single most important player on the team because he's making all of the key decisions, who was scared to death to do ANYTHING with the ball when he caught it. That's coaching malpractice.

Difference of opinion, I guess. I saw a lack of execution by the players.

There were openings they simply weren't taking advantage of, and when they did make the right decision, they weren't hitting the open men in the shooter's pocket which led to contested 3's instead of open ones.

The guy in the middle of the zone is a good, skilled player, who stunk today. I can't fault Izzo for trusting an experienced senior.

I'm not saying Izzo coached a great game or anything today, but this game is not on him, it's on the players. They didn't get the job done.

Hearing anything about Zhaire Smith @InBoobieWeTrust ?

I'm shocked that there's not more buzz surrounding him. By most statistical measures he has the profile of a typical top-3 pick. But unlike other statistical marvels like Jontay Porter, he passes the eye test too. He looked like a mini Ben Simmons out there last night. How is he not a lock to declare and go top-10?

The kid he put in the middle of the zone for 23 minutes today hadn't played double digit minutes in a game since November 30th (until Friday, when he played 10 minutes against Bucknell). He was a sixth year senior... but this was his first at MSU.

I'm well aware of that, but I also know that Ward, Tillman, and JJJ are better suited for that short corner spot. Carter is the best passer of the bunch, and that's probably why he was put in that spot.

I'm more upset that the guards never dribbled down to enter the ball to the short corner, and that when the guards did dribble penetrate, they threw shitty passes to their open teammates on the wing.

Again, I guess it's just a difference of opinion. Analyzing a basketball game is very subjective, and a lot of our analysis is based of assumptions about what we think people were trying to do. I'd love to ask Izzo a few questions because my opinion could flip pretty quickly, at least in regards to his performance today, depending on his answers.

So Ayton, Bamba, MPJ, JJJ, Young, Miles Bridges and of course Doncic out

Leaves just Mikal Bridges, Bagley, Wendall Carter, and Zhaire Smith left as potential top10 picks to evaluate in pressure packed games.

Anyone else left in the tournament you guys think could end up as a top10 pick in this draft?

Shai Gilgeous Alexander.

Rui Hachimura is interesting if he decides to declare and I doubt it. I think he is going to declare as a Junior.

We should somehow get Robert Williams as well.(Not with the Nets pick) Really like him at the next level.

Shai, Robert Williams, Mikal Bridges and Jaren Jackson. Get it done.

Screw that. Konate and Penava are better than Williams and more likely to be available if we end up with a second rounder somehow. That's the game to watch tonight. :popc1:

I feel like a kid in a candy store. Draft picks are so fun...having only one is disappointing.

Edit**********And I don't think they are better quite frankly :O

I don't know. To get outcoached, you have to actually make coaching decisions in the first place. Saying Boeheim outcoached him is like saying... well, I can't think of an analogy right now. Needless to say, Boeheim just threw his guys out there and watched as Izzo and his team shit all over themselves.

But seriously, fuck Syracuse and this whack ass zone. I hate Coach K, but I hope Duke rips them a new one on Friday.

If Cuse's zone is an affront to basketball, then what do you call Coach K's inability to teach 5 NBA prospects to play man to man defense?
