2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Watched the Trae Young interview on First Take this morning and ermmmm... he needs PR coaching pretty badly. I followed his interview about as well as Kyrie. Granted there were alot of nerves for a 19 yr old kid as opposed to Kyrie being a 25 yr old man and stammering and waxing poetic with a microphone, but it was bad.

I heard a player comp this morning on Sirius radio that I did NOT think of but now that its been made, I came into the office and it was scary how similar the stats are... Chris Jackson/Mahmoud Abdoul-Rauf. Wow. It's scary how eerily similar both in size/stature and game.
That is a great comparison for trae. Jackson was lights out off the dribble

That's my biggest issue with Young..his intangibles.

Something is off with the way he talks. I question his maturity and his leadership ability( very much so). He talks like a little kid.

Is that a red flag?

I’d rather have my unconscious gunner (thanks for this description Splitz) be a simpleton than an intellectual honestly.

Not mentioning defense, at all.

Should take more shots, do more of this and that.... (I know how nice his passes can look, but..) If he really could shoot like SC, no problem, doesn’t look like he can, so I would rather we trade the pick than have him.

Finished up a scouting report for Jacob Evans. I'm overall just lukewarm on him. Can see him making an immediate impact in the NBA next season similarly to Josh Hart. His game is already ready to play at the NBA level.

Also, this is the first one I've done that's incorporated some Synergy #'s. Hopefully that makes things even more informative. Now just need combine measurements to complete some of these. Will hopefully continue to knock these out as their seasons come to an end.

As always if you see any issues/mistakes with it I'd love for you to let me know.

Nice writeup...I do have a couple questions and a comment, since you ask:

-I worry the "athleticism" category is a little vague. How do you handle guys like Evans who're great athletically in some ways (strength, lateral mobility on defense) and poor in other ways (vertical explosion, first step on offense)?

-How will you evaluate players of different ages? Like, say you have a freshman and a senior both shooting 35% from deep on a couple attempts per game. Do they get the same rating for jumpshot, or does the freshman get a higher rating?

-You could use more of the 1-10 range in your ratings. Like, actually have 5/6 out of 10 mean "totally average relative to other prospects at his position" and 8/9/10 reserved for guys who are really exceptional at a particular thing. Would be a some work to re-do everything, but ultimately would be a bit more informative.

Yeah, those ratings are almost solely in there for visual effect lol. Athleticism is largely just in reference to in-game vertical explosiveness. I think the majority of people will think of that sort of thing initially when they see that. Either way, all of those traits you mentioned will be broken down in the report when needed.

The actual breakdown of strengths/weaknesses is where all the details are at. I'm not trying to quantify everything and condense it into a single value like a statistical model or anything. Just quick ratings on some basic skills that can give people a general idea of the type of player they are before diving into the details. I just come up with # for each attribute based on my overall opinion of the player. I've got an excel spreadsheet with pretty much every bit of info I use on these, and have those ratings all listed out for each guy for the sake of consistency. But it's nothing more than that.

I actually did start off rating guys on more of a 1-10 scale, but once I'm done you likely won't see a figure below 5. It was just too difficult for me to seperate say a rating of 3 from a rating of 4 when it's on a scale of 10 lol. And using the scale of 1-10 even though all of the numbers will be in the 5-10 range, again I think is just more visually appealing for people.

Don't read much into it, I pretty much pull those #s out of my ass lol. But I am making sure there's consistency from guy to guy, and I do make sure I have a complete idea of the type of player they are before doing that part. It's probably the last part I do.

How good do you think Abdoul-Rauf would've been if he'd come into the league 5 years ago instead of 25? I don't feel strongly either way, as he was before my time, just interested in your opinion.

Also, coughed up $12 to watch the last 3 rounds of the Euroleague regular season. Doncic in action today in a few hours today, on March 30, and on April 6. 24-year-old Cavs' acquisition Arturas Gudaitis is also playing today at the same time (different game) and again on March 29 and April 5.

EDIT: Link in case anyone else is interested https://www.euroleague.tv/packages

Abdoul-rauf was ahead of his time and was an emerging star until he fell off. I forget if it was injury or just his controversy with the national anthem. He would be so much better in the pace and space era I mean he killed it in the big 3 league this year due to his shooting and pull up.
