2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Something I've been working on for the past week or so. I got this idea from Kevin O'Connor, who now writes for the Ringer. He used to do these full-page scouting reports for his top 50 or so guys and sell them together as an e-book. He's since moved on to bigger and better things obviously on that site lol.

I think they're great for just common basketball fans who don't want to research players, and have pretty much all of the info they need on a prospect on one page. I made this one a couple days ago, so the stats and whatnot are already outdated.

I've done a few others as well, but hope to do plenty more. I may change some things too.. have considered adding player comparisons since I know people like those.

Awesome work man...my only quibble is that I'd like to see turnovers included under stats too (as noted in your commentary, turnovers could make or break a prospect like Sexton). Looking forward to more of these!!

Thanks, yea I'm open to criticism or ideas of how I can adjust these.

I know I want to add some stats into the strength/weakness areas but not doing that yet as the #s would become outdated. That's probably a good spot there for one

Another great game by Doncic (20 pts on 7/11 shooting, 3 boards, 5 assists) marred by a costly turnover with 29 seconds left and Real Madrid down 1 that arguably cost his team the game. If there's a complaint to be made about his game it's that he's struggled at times to make big plays in the clutch. Something to keep an eye on going forward.

Here's the turnover:

He is having problems against big man on the switch. He is having problems generating offense when the PnR action is taken away from him and that's going to be the norm for him in the NBA.
He needs to become more shifty and somehow become a bit more quick with the ball in iso situations

His reach is pretty bad and i'm pretty hesistant about him. I think he is going to struggle a lot finishing inside. Isn't crafty enough and can't elevate high enough to finish over length. He is going to struggle a lot in the beginning trying to adjust to the NBA size and fewer foul calls.

I agree to an extent, but he did draw 10 (!) fouls in that game, and leads Euroleague in fouls drawn overall. So there probably are a lot of plays where he gets the defender on his heels and forces him to foul. Quick highlight videos just don't show those plays.

I watch the full games... he is getting very favourable foul call, alot of ticky tack foul that he really shouldnt get.

He doesnt really get anyone on their heels in the half court, but he looks slower than usual the last few games.

Doncic is still so young to lead a team like RM and he is doing it in style, but right now, his teammates kinda suck in comparison to the start of the season.
the weaknesses are definitely there and I would not take him top 3 if we get the chance. The game against Macabbi for instance, where they have a few USA produced wings (strong&mobile) he really showed some worrisome stuff. But oth the lanes are really clogged in the Europe, so who knows. And he sometimes plays with such ease against the best competition, that it just surprises you.

I have mixed feelings about how he will translate to the NBA.

I agree... actually all top 5 prospects this year are scary as fuck. I still love Doncic because he is so cerebral and has such an advanced and beautiful game, but his physical limitations and weaknesses are real.

His size, shooting, and passing ability for a point guard prospect are absolutely top notch. You drop any other 18-year-old point guard in basketball history into his situation, and a handful or less will have the level of all-around success he's having.

It's fair to question how he'd fare against an NBA defense, but that's a question for every prospect, moreso guys in college basketball who're frequently going up against defenders who wouldn't sniff a Euroleague roster.

Don't think any 18 year old in the world can do a better job than Doncic is doing for Real.

He is going to thrive in a fast pace offense and good spacing, but he is going to need the right players around him maybe more than anyone else. Should be a beast running the fast break.

I kinda suspect he is going to need similar players around him as LeBron does, capable shooters, mobile bigs with range, very agile defense, but the difference will be the team will have to run around him/for him, not wait for him to break defense down for them. If that makes sense?

Did a quick search on sports reference to find college freshmen with similar profiles to Doncic; I set cutoffs at 14 points per game (Doncic averages 17), 5 rebounds per game (Doncic averages 6), 3 assists per game (Doncic averages 4.3), and 55% true shooting (Doncic averages 62%).

7 freshmen have hit those benchmarks in the last 25 years, and 6 of them were top-3 picks:
