2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It was a real treat watching Jevon Carter defend Trae Young the other day, as I mentioned earlier. Both guys made the other pay for every single tiny mistake. You'd think they were 10-year pros going at it. If anyone's craving a good college basketball game tonight, try to find that one on youtube.

Don't think he's been mentioned in here yet, but Jaylen Adams from St. Bonaventure is almost as fun to watch as Trae Young. Similarly to Young, he lives off of pull up deep three's consistently. He's shooting over 50% from three and that includes going 8 for 13, and 10 for 13 in his last two games.

He's got a decent handle, but isn't super quick. He's undersized for a 2 guard at 6'2" and will never be a good defender. As you'd expect he struggles around the rim given his lack of size and athleticism. He's shooting just 42.7% from 2 point range this year, but does get to the FT line some to help counteract that. He's also going to be 22 years old on draft night.

He reminds me of a poor man's Lou Williams. He might not even get drafted at this point. I don't expect him to pop up on anyone's radars either later on in the season. The only real way that they get into the NCAA tourney is if they win the A-10 conference, but Rhode Island looks like they have a stranglehold on that.

Jevon Carter does look atleast 30. I mean... damn.

Also, not sure he is going to be the same elite defender in the NBA.. his lateral quickness fails him at times and he does like to hand check a lot.

Here's some decent video of Adams too for those that don't want to look it up lol.

One thing that sticks out to me is his shot release is a bit slow and out in front of his body. Reminds me a little bit of Anfernee Simons' shot. That may lead to some issues, but he seems like he's a tough shot maker.

I've brought this up with Trae Young awhile ago, as well as Lonzo Ball, but I think Adams also benefits from defenses just not generally being used to defending guys 5-6 feet off the 3 point line. Defenses have since adjusted to Young, but I remember that Lonzo could essentially get an uncontested shot whenever he wanted because of this. That advantage won't be there in the NBA.

I think he's also capable of running a good amount of P&R. Hopefully enough to play the 1 in the NBA, we'll see. At the very least this guy will average 25 a game in Europe somewhere.

Here's all of his 3's vs St. Louis where he went for 44 points. The game before that he went for a measly 40 points.

Physically he's nothing special but his hands are like magic. You'd think with "Press Virginia" he'd get most of his steals playing passing lanes, but really he gets almost all of them in man defense, which is remarkable. If you expose the ball to him for even a split second it's just gone.

He uses his hands a lot, I do wonder if he is going to get called for it in the NBA, he is a unique player though. Very similar player to Marcus Smart, but has better shot from 3.

I can imagine him getting 4 fouls in 20 minutes off the bench in the NBA...but whoever the opposing point guard is will hate his guts for that whole 20 minutes :chuckle:

Mikal Bridges continues to disappoint me. He needs to become a much better rebounder and a better all-around scorer.
I really had him up there in my mock draft earlier in the season.

Miles Bridges, while he has his own flaws just projects as a player with a higher ceiling, unfortunately as I do like Mikal more for some reason.

Career high 33 for Jevon Carter...his development on that end should have him in the mix for a late first round pick. I know we don't have any such pick anymore, but old habits die hard :chuckle:

He joins Trae Young and Devonte Graham as the only major conference players averaging at least 17 points and 6 assists this season.

He's a wing, not sure why rebounding matters much at all given the possible major flaws of the other top 10 guys. He's averaging 7.0 reb/40.

I don't think anyone's really drafting him to become a 20 ppg scorer in the NBA, though he could possibly get there. He's averaging 16.6 ppg on a top 5 offense in the country, despite having two teammates with a higher USG%. He can shoot off the catch, get to the rim fairly well, and get buckets off pure hustle.

Also, earlier in this season Mikal struggled with creating off the dribble, and that's just gotten stuck in peoples' heads. Yet I think he's made strides in that facet of his offensive game. And of just about anyone in this draft, I would trust Mikal more than anyone to continue to improve his game year over year. And that's not even to bring up his defense, where he may be the most versatile guy on that end in the entire draft.

Okay then, where do you have him picked? I want him, but I just can't pick him in the top 9 I don't think. I think he is going to be a fine NBA player, but being the only real asset out of the Kyrie trade, I just can't pick him with our pick.

Watching Cedi play, nicely shows how important it is for a rookie to play defense. Their mistakes cost you the most on defense, if they just play within their skills on offense they don’t hurt you if they are talented defenders.
