2018 Series 24 | Tigers @ Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He's right though.

So glad these guys can romp on JV teams in July while their balls shrivel up in October.
That is what it will come down to in the end. The collapses of the last two postseasons have shaken my faith in them unfortunately. Hopefully, they can redeem themselves.

The Indians have been collapsing in spectacular fashion in October for over 20 years, let’s not act surprised now.

Let's review. Some of their postseason appearances over the years: blew a 3-1 lead in WS, blew a 2-0 lead in ALDS after winning 102 games, shut out in wildcard game to Tampa Bay of all teams, blew 3-1 lead in ALCS, blew World Series in extra innings of Game 7.

But nope, nothing to see here folks. :chuckle:

At this point, they could be up 3-0 in the World Series in 2018 and I will still be making diamonds.

lol... a team pitching Ryan Merritt and having bullpen days during the playoffs losing in 7 in the World Series when they had key at bats by Michael Martinez is now a mark against them

They should have never even been up 3-1 in the world series. That team was laughably depleted by injuries and was able to make an extremely impressive run. Now they're known as chokers.

Must be a lot of chokers in baseball.

None of this ever happened folks!!!

Who disagrees with this? The Indians choking in October is an irrefutable fact and nothing you can peg with a disagree. To add to the above, they blew another 2-0 lead in '99.

Terrible.

They never "should have been there," but they were. They had to win 1 game out of 3. Sure, it hurts slightly less because that team was an underdog. But nobody is an underdog when you are up 3-1.

Personally, I never used the word choker. That's you. Seeing as all the teams from 97 to 2018 feature drastically different rosters, it'd be inane for me to call a franchise "chokers" as if the jersey they wore had some effect.

But I can't deny what has happened. That is a lot of blown opportunities. Thus, as a fan, no matter what the series lead is, I won't be feeling comfortable.

What the Indians did in 1999 has literally nothing to do with what these Indians are doing. Not even the same owner.

The 2016 team overachieved. Like, I really don't think you guys are remembering how bad it got with injuries. A rookie made his first postseason start in the ALCS and Tribe fans sent him wedding gifts afterwards. That run was special. In the end we lost 3 straight to a team that was fully healthy. Not many were expecting to make it to game 7 of the World Series after Cookie went down. It's not like we were shoe in favorites (doesn't even exist in baseball) and stumbled on our last leg to greatness. We were a team that had a special run that ran out of gas.

Last year our stars didn't show up in a 5 game series. Ok. The Yankees then proceeded to do the same thing the very next round and Judge had like 45Ks against the Indians. They have had 2 postseason runs as a group. One they way overachieved and the other they underachieved. Not sure how this is now a trend because of 1999

Again, I won't accuse an entire franchise of being "chokers." I really dislike the word.

But...as you said, what happened happened. :chuckle: I didn't even really mean it as some indictment of the team or franchise, it's just well-known fact the Indians have failed in spectacular fashion in the postseason many times. Didn't think that was even up for debate.

Choker has been used, ad nauseam, to describe this team in this section since they lost to the Cubs. You might not have used it but it gets used all the time to describe them

Again, when you are up 3-1 in a best of 7, the odds favor you overwhelmingly. Pretty sure not one person on this forum was saying we were gonna lose when we went up 3-1, so while I do recall the injuries, I don't really care about them in the context of my original post. The Indians should have won after going up 3-1. Period. They didn't.

Last year was pretty inexcusable, though, man.

Well, this is where we agree, I guess. I don't like the word and I certainly wouldn't apply it to a team that faced the adversity of the Indians. They did overachieve. My only point of contention is that being up 3-1, you should win. The Indians didn't lose a bunch of players from Game 1 to Game 5. They had the same team that went up 3-1 on the Cubs. Then that same team proceeded to blow the series. They lost in spectacular and horrific fashion, but I'd certainly stop short of calling them choke artists or whatever buzzword.

When you're in the playoffs you're either going to win it all, or blow it at some point. I don't think this is something to hold against them.

Not really "holding it against them" in all honesty. It is what it is. When you're in, you're going to win it all or lose, I agree. But doesn't mean you have to blow big series leads every time. :chuckle:
