2019 Around the MLB

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Bell is 26, going into his prime, his defense does suck, speed isn't great, but his bat has improved this season overall and he isn't EE with the HRs normally, but on any given season he can hit 25+ HRs. He is better in the AL than DL but he is not as bad as that scout is saying at all.

Thank you Coach

About Josh Bell, @AZ_ @Derek @Urban

What would you guys be willing to give up for Bell? He profiles as an AL DH, who can play some field (Though not trustworthy there), but he has a good bat and is a switch hitter. My bet is they would be after a starting pitcher though and a couple solid prospects with that pitcher.

Honestly if I was the Pirates I would almost move Bell if the price was right mostly because they have Moran playing 3rd mostly (who can play some OF, 2B and 1st and is a solid player), but your top position prospect, Hayes, will likely be at 3rd base next season and your number 12 prospect, Will Craig, is a 1B who is at the cusp of coming up. I could see teams like the Indians, Tampa Bay etc, a team who needs an everyday DH maybe putting in offers for him, and with his team control, you should be able to get some solid prospects back. Moran or Craig will take over 1st base next season, with Hayes at 3rd.

I feel the pirates arent making the playoff this season, but they don't have a bad team overall, and have a few decent prospects at the MLB door, so why not move rentals (Dickerson, Melky, etc) and a guy like Bell, to try and make the team better for next season. I am not saying trade him for any package, but his price won't be any higher and it could net you that starter you need for the rotation.

He'd cost way more than I'd feel comfortable giving up. As you mentioned, his value is at an all time high and the Pirates would be looking for an absolute haul in return. Just doesn't seem like the type of trade the Indians would make, especially since they are nearing a crossroad of a 'mini-retool'

I'd be surprised if they are shopping Bell before he even reaches arbitration. #12 prospects in an organization, who are already in the upper levels, are throw away guys for the most part, they aren't high percentage successes.

They certainly aren't going to trade their breakthrough young 1B to open up a spot for their #12 prospect.

If he were to be traded, it'd be a much larger package of prospects than I'd be willing to give up.

It feels like you took what I said a different way than intended. Moran, who is the current everyday 3B, is also a backup guy for other positions including first, will not be at 3rd next season, because of their top position prospect, Hayes, will at 3B next season. Moran will be playing elsewhere (plays 1B, 2B and LF), plus they have their number 12 prospect, a RH power bat, at AAA, who is also a 1B. So on paper they could trade Bell, and fill in other holes on the roster, and probably still come out alright in the end. I wasn't saying they are making an opening for the number 12 prospect, but an opening so their current 3B, who doesn't have a spot to play next season since he won't be at 3rd. Hayes is a better defensive 3B (on paper right now) than Moran.

It would be like what we did with Kluber and Bauer in the off season, only taking a certain type of offer or keeping him. I feel it is possible though they could trade him, if the offer was good enough and we do have a lot of starting pitching in our system, just not sure if we want to chance it and he would be an extension candidate in the off season as well since he starts arbitration next year if I am correct, so we could keep him until 2024/25 type of thing.

Edit: Pirates it feels like to me, badly need more starting pitching right now, they are a top 5 offense in baseball, but a bottom 5 in pitching and don't have a lot of pitching outside of Keller ready for the pros as a starter right now. You aren't going to get good starting potential from rentals like Dickerson or Melky, so Bell may be a way to get that starter you need long term. The trade for Archer was a bad move for them honestly!

No, it wouldn't. Bauer's team control is limited, and Kluber is in his 30's. Bell hasn't even gone to arbitration yet, and is just entering his prime.

I understood what you were saying, you don't need to explain further. I just don't think your reasoning makes any sense. Bell is young, and cost controlled, they exact kind of guy the Pirates are looking to build around, not deal away.

Who will be their starters long term then? They don't have a good farm system for starters, but have depth that can hit. Outside of Keller, they don't have starters coming up anytime soon it feels like. A bottom 5 pitching unit in general will never make it anywhere in the current era even with a top 5 offense.

Taillon, Musgrove, and Williams are all under control for a while. Lyles has been good if they can retain him.

It won't be a special rotation by any means, but they're middle of the pack without Taillon, and could be slightly above average.

I still feel they will want to improve that, Keller should be good as well in due time. Also in that division, can you just get away with slightly above average? I just don't think thats enough talent overall to compete in the division. 3 of the teams in the division numbers wise are rated in the top 10 for pitching this season and 2 of them are in front of them in standings, with the 14th and 23rd ranked offenses in baseball. Pitching wins games more than offense in this current era.

This is just my opinion, their offense won't be hurt as much going forward if they do trade Bell for pitching. But it would have to be a big haul, which I don't think anyone would pay for anyways.

Ps: About rankings, I am going by quick stats, the pirates are on paper one of the better contact hitting teams, but do need a little more power and to take more walks, but I still feel they need way more talent in the pitching.

Pretty sad that they can't give them Bauer for Meadows, Glasnow and Baz since they already gave up those studs for Chris fuckin Archer.

But Bell is untouchable, it would be a package that doesn't interest Cleveland because of his inflexibility defensively.

That Archer trade was a bad idea for the Pirates, I never expected them to go for Archer let alone give up that much.

Rays player development is special. They've even got Yandy hitting for some power without any time in the minors.
