2019 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
That's not why. Barkley was a sure thing. Lindsay was undrafted for a reason. No one knew if he'd pan out or not.

That said, the reason you don't draft a RB that high is because it's a terrible use of a great asset for a position that is easy to fill with quality players. Almost every team in the league has at least one good RB, and you can find guys who are almost as guaranteed to pan out as Barkley (Guice, Chubb, and Michel were three of those guys this year, with Michel's only real question mark being the knee) at the end of the first, in the second, and often even later. Drafting a RB in the top ten instantly makes them a top ten RB in salary, which is the issue here. You're not saving any money by drafting a RB high, and thus it's a waste of a draft pick because the best part about draft picks is that you get them on cheap deals for four to five years, which helps the team plug holes without paying a premium to do it. You're much better off drafting a more valuable position that high so you actually save some money on an elite player for his first several years.

You're basically re-wrapping what I said.

"It's a terrible use of a great asset for a position that is easy to fill"

That's precisely the point. How often do you find QBs that are UDFA and producing in year one?

Right, but my point was that Barkley went high because he was a sure thing. Lindsay went undrafted because he was not. Their statistical comparison is mostly irrelevant. Lindsay panned out, but no one knew he would pan out heading into the draft. Everyone knew Barkley would pan out, except for maybe one or two people here apparently who didn't want us to draft him so they felt the need to justify it by saying he'd suck. Barkley is also built like an actual workhorse back at 6', 230 pounds. Lindsay is built like a satellite back at 5'7", 180 pounds. Not hard to see why one of those guys was drafted high and the other went undrafted. Lindsay is likely going to have issues staying healthy, as most small backs tend to. Barkley, on the other hand, is built like a fucking truck, and he seems to shrug off injuries like LeBron James.

Now, does that mean that Barkley was an objectively good pick at second overall? Of course not. He's still a RB in a league that has devalued the position. But he was basically a guaranteed star player. Lindsay was a lottery ticket that happened to pan out, although I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes irrelevant in a year or two like a lot of flash in the pan RBs have.

MOCK MONDAY:

CBS (during Sunday's games - so we are at #10)

CLE.png
10. Cleveland Browns

Ed Oliver, DT, Houston.

Good luck to interior offensive linemen in the AFC if the Browns can land Oliver to play next to the Herculean Larry Ogunjobi on the inside. Perfect complementary tandem for Cleveland's defensive front.

BR

11. Cleveland Browns: Greg Little, OT, Ole Miss

PFF (Renner)

11. CLEVELAND BROWNS – BYRON MURPHY, CB, WASHINGTON

After taking Denzel Ward last year, the Browns go back to the well to build a budding, young secondary. Listed at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds Murphy doesn’t have near the size of a corner like Greedy Williams, but he makes up for it with athleticism and ball skills. Murphy is the highest-graded corner in the country (91.2) and has 13 combined pass breakups and interceptions.

The most jarring thing about all these mocks is seeing us pick in the double digits. :chuckle:

Here's a few more to add to the list:

BR - Matt Miller

The Pick: OT Jonah Williams, Alabama

The first offensive lineman in a defense-heavy draft goes to the perfect spot for his play—Cleveland.

Since losing Joe Thomas to retirement, the Browns have drafted projects to replace him and actually seen decent play from Desmond Harrison. With their first-round pick in 2019, the Browns can solidify the left tackle position by looking at Alabama's solution to the left side.

Jonah Williams' size (6'5", 305 lbs) has been mentioned by scouts as a concern, but his technique is nearly flawless. He has the strength, timing and intelligence to man the edge of the Browns offense and keep Baker Mayfield clean and happy in the backfield.

CBS - Ryan Wilson

D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss.

Metcalf declared for the draft last week after his college season was cut short by injury. He was one of college football's most dynamic pass catchers before he was hurt and he'll give Baker Mayfield the physical downfield threat he lost when Josh Gordon was traded.

Any thoughts on if Mayfield's own Andy Isabella will get drafted or do anything in the NFL? I just saw he got an invite to the Senior Bowl. He's small, but fast as hell. His senior year he ran the fasted 60 meter time in the nation at 6.72 seconds, which according to my probably faulty math equates to about a 4.1 40 time. Some people on my Twitter timeline were talking about him, I watched him play for Mayfield a few times but have since forgotten about him. Seems like one of those guys the Patriots will pick up in the 7th or undrafted and turn him into something.

While I think he would be a perfect pick in the early teens for the Browns, I am having a hard time rooting for us to draft a guy named Greg Little.

Physically, he has more offensive tackle traits then the two prospects expected to go higher: Jonah Williams and Dalton Risner. The criticism has been his motor, but he still graded out very high in pass protection all year. I'd happily plug him into right tackle while retaining Greg Robinson at left tackle in free agency.

He's going to go higher than that, IMO.

He's the white Tyreek Hill. He's probably smaller than Edleman was, but he absolutely has a role on an NFL team.

In the era of matchup football, he's a nightmare. I loved Ryan Switzer a few years back, and this dude is just as good and absolutely faster.

Really really good player.

Ryan Switzer, good kid. Grew up down the road from me. Mom is hot as hell.
See her regularly at the pool. Oh yeah

Small school GUY:

Alex Wesley - Northern Colorado

400m sprinter turned full-time football player. Can absolutely fly and shows some nice skills in this video. Someone to keep in mind for the middle rounds.

Heading to the Sr. Bowl.

Mock Monday, damnit.

CBS has Ed Oliver out of the top 10. Has us snagging Greedy.

It’s nice not to be frustrated with a win. They sure as fuck don’t feel meaningless this go-around.

Really interested to see how a guy like Byron Murphy holds up against the OSU receiver group in the RB.

So what does everyone think is our needs?

I am not convinced LT is a need, Robinson has looked good. I also like our WR core and going WR in the first is such a gamble as WR is the hardest position to develop and takes a couple of years typically before you see return.

And with Ward, do we still want to spend high draft capital on a corner? I am thinking it might be worth it, but would love to find an athletic DT to put in there with the rest of the defensive line.

Ed Oliver
Quinnen Williams

Trade the pick for Jalen Ramsey or OBJ

I would really like another defensive end or linebacker. I have a few issues with drafting a DT so high... for one, they peak really early, but tend not to be long-term pieces unless you hit a grand slam in drafting the right one. Also, to really have a serious, above-replacement level impact, they either need to be talented pass rushers or really good tacklers.

With that said, they are also the safest pick in the first round. College production translates almost perfectly to NFL success as a DT. Over the last five years they have the second lowest bust percentage. Additionally, if we hit it out of the park, that frees up a lot for Myles Garrett. Finally, because run games are mostly determined by line play and not RBs themselves, a good DT helps us force the other team to pass the ball.

Positionally-ranked, I'd rate left tackle, receiver, pass rushing defensive end, and outside linebacker as bigger needs. Regardless, Browns are in the position where they can just draft the BPOA, so I am pretty much okay with any position as long as it is the best player on the board.
