As a small market baseball fan, this scares the shit out of me.
It’s very, very slippery—it’s already hard enough to sign players out of high school based on their options.
If they start holding out looking for this kind of treatment, then the slotted rates and bonus pool are going to be endangered. Prospects with options will want that Major League deal, even if it means using a spot on that 40-man.
The troubling issue with this is that baseball is very unique in that players need years to develop—especially those out of high school.
So while I enjoy baseball showing a degree of flexibility—as they are often one of the least flexible major sports—this move at least gives me pause.
