Wills will be the LT through next year with his low starting salary.. However, they have a decision to make on his 5th year option which is slated to pay him in the $13M-$14M range... Give that, I can't see the Browns picking that up it's price tag and they'd have Hudson making only $1M in 2024..

I think it's more likely Conklin stays a Brown beyond 2024 then Wills does..

I could actually see Conklin wanting to stay on a team friendly deal. He has said multiple times he loves it here and wants to stay.

I disagree with you here.

Wills' 5th year option of $13M is still only going to rank like roughly 16th or 17th in left tackle average value. It's a position where salaries are exploding in value.

It turns out paying Wills like a middle of the road LT is actually a wild overpay

Not sure there's anything we can do this year, but just a bad pickup of that option. Dawand is going to need to slide to the left next year and maybe the man made of glass can give us a game or 2 at RT before he is out again

High need in the draft but luckily Dawand looks to be an absolute steal

Sucks going back to the beginning of this thread and realizing we could have had Wirfs.

Jedrick "I didn't know they stacked shit that high" Wills

I think the question becomes how to move on from Wills. He's guaranteed this year and next. Is a trade possible? Cutting him isn't wise because of the guarantee. Not sure benching him is better; especially with Jones needing to learn a new position and the unlikelihood of drafting an above average starting LT after round 1. So...are the Browns stuck with him for 32 more games?

You could trade him in a heartbeat if you wanted.

Your best case is that he gets his head on straight--but I wouldn't count on that happening.

Idk it isn’t that bad, and I am not a fan. Plus it’s early. Plus if he leaves in 2 years we get a comp pick end of r3 (I think?).

It’s just not an astronomical guarantee and we have glass man out all year on the other end. We have a lot of flexibility here:
-draft his replacement with relatively high draft capital.
-move DJ to the left side next year.
-hope he realizes that DJ is a threat and it motivates him.

If anything, rn his value to us is higher than to anyone else, given the Conklin injury.

Best long term guess (hope?) is we just “land the plane” with him and let him walk in a couple of years. We ultimately don’t keep him or Conklin, but we spend on RT and Jones is so nasty that he is LT4Life.

His lack of ability lead directly to the strip-sack TD that gave the Steelers the lead at the end of the game. He may not have directly cost the team the game, but he definitely didn't help.

I was an apologist of his prior to this season, but he's made me feel like an idiot, so I'm fully out on him.

I will admit... I'm probably in the minority but I had secretly hoped they would decline it and use that money in 2024 to bring in another LT via FA or trade.

Yes, Jed is an "average" player (though I'd have him slightly below average) and will have an average LT salary in 2024, but the difference in talent between LTs in the #10-14 range and #16 is pretty massive, IMO. Orlando Brown Jr for example will make 16 million while Jed Wills (next to Bitonio and on an o-line coached by Bill Callahan) will make 14 million.

Eh, I'm not mad at it but I do think Wills has had every opportunity to turn himself into a really good LT but isn't doing it.
^^^My post when we picked up Jed's 5th year option.

Can't say I feel any differently. Jed has literally declined every single year. In fact, I'd rather we had the 14 million free for a Trent Brown or Tyron Smith who are both free agents next year. Maybe add a LT in the draft that could start. Even in the trade market, teams like the Broncos and Dolphins might be looking to shed some cap and could trade Garett Bolles or Terron Armstead. Plug in these players next to Bitonio and under Callahan? I bet they look even better.

And if we have to tac on an extra 3-5 million for whatever reason then so be it. Armstead (injury prone sure) at 17 million per is infinitely better than Wills at 14 million, IMO.

I understand the caution with the o-line led to extending Conklin and picking up Jed's 5th year but I truly think the FA/trade market + draft (like with Thanos) can net us guys who can do better than Jed and Jack.

I wanna change my grade.
This was a "right idea, wrong player" in the same sense that Corey Coleman was.

Although what they actually should've done is Rent-a-Peters for a year for LT, and drafted Justin Jefferson (even considering they already had Chase/Jefferson Lite in OBJ/Jarvis.)

I felt the same way, and it’s been the one of the biggest head scratcher’s for me with Berry..

I get the former 1st round aspect but nothing we’ve seen gives you any confidence in extension, and you can get similar production for a lot less..

Being in the Wills business is not one I want any investment in..
