2022 Summer League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I am not caught up and there is a million pages here lol

How are the guys looking in the summer league? (Aka I am looking for an update on the draftees and names that could be on the roster).

The summer league is a bullshit glorified playground scrimmage and 90% of the comments are bullshit, same as every other year. Wake me when there's some real news or when the season starts. Same goes for the Watson situation and the Browns. The Guardians are the only legit thing happening right now.

I guess I kind of look at summer league as a chance to somewhat reduce the shock of the speed of the NBA that all these newbies are going to get. I am not sure it helps, but as a fan I'm glad we get a chance to see our newbies even for a second.

Some of the microscopic criticisms about how we're not "developing "our players amidst the SL shitshow strike me as being a little over the top.

I feel like you should have followed the group in white in the back to see what type of shenanigans they wound up in.
Those are 3's in a world of 10's in Vegas

Curious when Koby plans getting a good traditional wing player. Garland Mobley Allen is not good enough to win a championship alone. They need a wing, and the three of them are about to eat up all the cap space. I can already envision the (valid) GDT complaints about the lack of a decent wing player.

Maybe next offseason.
I have a sneaking feeling that Koby doesn’t know what a SF looks like, much less how to actually acquire one.

I don't care what they look like. They are prime for drunken, public displays of shenanigans. I'm looking for people doing stupid shit and Bachelorette parties can easily fall down that path.

I've said this before but I think Koby is operating under some odd when the league zings we zang mentality. The league values wings so much that they might be overvalued and Koby I think is trying to see if he can build a team with a heavy emphasis on guards and bigs who should be cheaper.

I also think the triple towers lineup could have emboldened Koby to try to find more unorthodox lineups. I wouldn't be surprised if he is hoping to find a 3 guard lineups that gives them an advantage.

I do think if they can't find more good lineups this season that they will combine players and assets to go after a SF, possibly at the trade deadline. I do wish Koby took some swings at SFs in the 2nd round or with UDFA to see if he could hit on one instead of deferring year after year to find one.

I feel like this is probably giving him way too much credit. We could have just drafted a cost controlled wing in Terry or Eason, if we actually wanted a wing relative to the positional value. Instead we took another more one dimensional guard who can’t create.

The only big positive to SL, to me, is it seems like OA might be able to scratch out some rebound and stock production, when his shot isn’t falling. So that would at least be an improvement over Okoro……who is commonly a complete zero across the board on bad nights.

It’s not that complicated. Cavs had two pressing needs this off season. They needed floor spacing and PG skills. There wasn’t much in the way of PG’s in the draft, but there was a good shooter, so they drafted the shooter. They used the MLE to add point guards.

Cavs already have a glut of average to below average wings right now. They dont have a great wing, but none of the SF’s on the board at #14 were likely to be great wings in the near future. Didn’t make sense to draft a rookie when he’d likely end up on the depth chart behind Markkanen, Osman, Wade, LeVert, and Windler (if he suddenly gets healthy) unless the rookie was a lights out shooter because the team needed shooting, not another average wing player. Neither Terry or Eason were good enough shooters to climb up on the depth chart at SF.

The reason they didn't pick a wing makes sense but its that reasoning I dont like. If we were a team with stars in their prime on the cusp of championship contention, grabbing a ready to go shooter makes sense.

That is not where we are. We are a borderline playoff team with a young group of stars not at their prime. This was a chance to take a swing and get another blue chip stud. Och might develop into that yet, but the probability of Eason or someone like Griffin or Branham doing that was much higher. Och might be the better prospect for 2023 but not for 2026 which is when we should be planning for.

Short term thinking is what you do when you don't want something sustainable and jts what we've done here

The Cavs have 3 young stars, but only one provides any outside shooting. The young stars that the Cavs have are not going to look good without more shooting or PG skills to fill in the gaps between them.

How were the Cavs going to add shooting if they spent the MLE on PG's and drafted another average/below average shooter? How is that young non-shooter even going to get playing time when there's a glut of average vets in front of him?

Maybe you think Sexton provides the play making and the shooting. Maybe he can. The problem is that it isn't a sure thing that he can, and it isn't a sure thing that he even rejoins the team this year.

Maybe you think Koby can trade a bunch of non shooters for a shooter. Once again, could happen. Probably not but it could happen. Seems like a big risk. Seems complicated.

No need to make it complicated or risky. You just draft the shooter.
