2023-2024 Off-Season Thread II

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think the issue is Mobley is a unique player. He already is a top 5 defensive player with DPOY potential, maybe even 50/50 at this point on the DPOY. He isnt a classic defensive big man like Hakeem who would get you 4 blocks, its that Mobley has the potential to be maybe the best big man at guarding well...guards. Its so unique of a talent.

As for his offense. He has talent, but his shot is a work in progress and so is his post moves, but he is already good around the post (not great)...but he has elite length and athletic ability which is on the level of a Garnett so thus sometimes the comparison, but he hasnt shown Garnetts offensive ability that was evident early in Garnett's career.

Mobley's ceiling is still MVP, but chances are he becomes more of a top 20 and borderline top 10 player, not a Giannis or Garnett level, but like Garnett, I am sure Mobley will star in an Adam Sandler movie someday, that part is obvious.

I agree that Mobley is a really unique player. He could be one of the great big man defenders ever. But he’s not a hard nosed interior shot blocking banger, he’s this smooth gliding presence who seems to be everywhere on the court. It’s spooky. AD had some of that quality but not sure I’ve ever seen it like him.

Then offensively he has great length and interior presence, he’s already a more prolific scorer than great big man defensive specialists like Marcus Camby etc, but he also seems to lack some instinct and touch outside the dunkers spot. Just hard to tell where it will all go. But he’s already the heart of a league-leading defense

I think Ty Jerome is an intriguing player who is finishing up his four-year apprenticeship and is ready for a bigger role. For example, he is becoming more of an attacking player than a perimeter shooter. His first three years in the league his percentage of 2-point shots was 56%, 41%, and 43% (rounded off). Last year it was 63%. The biggest increase was in the 3-10' range. Only 37% of his shots were 3's compared to 58% and 57% the previous two years. Quite a change.

His 3-point percentage improved from 29% the previous year to 39% last year, probably because he was taking fewer but better 3-point shots and passing up the contested ones. I heard he has a good floater and in fact he made 53% from 3-10'. At 6'5" he can get that floater off.

His free throw shooting has improved from 75% as a rookie to 92% last year. His true shooting percentage was 59.4% last year, a career high.

It looks like he came into the league as a long range gunner, but has developed the ability to take it into the paint and score on layups and floaters as well.

I heard he's somewhat of a defensive liability, but I love having a 6'5" point guard who can shoot 39% from deep and also get into the paint and finish with either a floater or a layup (74% makes on layups last year). I don't know how much of an impact he'll have, but I'm intrigued.

Another reason I'm intrigued with Jerome is that he hung 22 points and 8 assists on the Cavs in the Warriors 120-114 upset win in Cleveland on Jan. 20. With Curry, Thompson, Green, and Wiggins out the W's were down four starters and playing on the second night of a back-to-back.

I was expecting an easy win for the Cavs, but the W's bench, led by Jerome playing 41 minutes at point guard, not only beat the Cavs but hung 120 points on their top-ranked defense. Donovan Mitchell was out, but the loss to the W's bench still stung.

I remember that it sucked. Mitchell was out too though.

22 points on only 13 shots, 3-4 on 3s, 8 assists vs only 1 TO…he played well for sure.

Hey, if anything, Olga has taught us that people can change and become something more than what they were just a few years ago...

AKA: I think Mobley is thinking of getting tits.
They're called "pecs". Sheesh.

I'm assuming they have Darius and Ty Jerome as our point guards, but when Darius gets a rest we could easily shift Donovan to PG and have LeVert as the backup 2 if JBB doesn't want to play Jerome. But that would leave Strus and Okoro as the 3's, so that position would be weaker then if it was Strus and LeVert. It comes down to whether you want to give more minutes to Jerome or Okoro. It depends on the opponent and whether you want offense or defense.

It's nice that Strus and LeVert can bounce back and forth between the 2 and 3 while both DG and DM can play point guard. There is a ton of flexibility at the 1-3 positions and it will be up to JBB to find out which combinations work the best.

This is where Wade being complete ass last year was such a gigantic letdown. That guy with length coming off the bench who can shoot and rebound to play alongside Niang and compliment LeVert’s drive and kick ability is a big need. It was also why I was really hopeful PJ Washington was a target.

Imagine watching these and drawing up an Al Horford comparison. I don't want some of whatever he's smoking, that shit is bunk.

You are underestimating horford and way overestimating Mobley. Horford was the best defensive big in the league for years and got snubbed of a ton of allstars. He was a Boston Celtic you know. Mobley dreams of being that good.

(This was sarcastic to be clear)

The NBA 23-24 GM Survey is out:
  • Cavs 3rd most likely among the East to win the chip
  • Donny absent from list of best SGs
  • Mobley absent from list of best defenders, but received votes for best interior D
  • GMs seem to think Strus is an underrated pick up
  • Emoni among steals of the draft
  • Very little to write home about re: our coaching staff
  • Cavs young core remains only second to OKCs
