Bucks have been torn on their defensive coverages all season.
Part of the justification for firing Bud was his system called for Lopez, Giannis and Portis to consistently DROP on HPNR or perimeter initiations and play something similar to the zone principles that had us giving up open 3's to ball movement teams. They got exploited by Spo in last years playoffs so bad by Miami just having a disciplined approach to ball movement and shooting them out of that drop coverage with their bigs.
Griffin promised to be more aggressive with his bigs defensive rotations, and then 10 games in, when the bigs were getting cooked and giving up everything at the rim AND their rebounding plummeted as a result of the downgrade at the point of attack from Jrue, Grayson and Jevon Carter to Dame, Bease and Cam Payne, he switched Lopez back to dedicated drop but kept Giannis and Portis in that blitz. Giannis and Portis rebound numbers have still cratered and none of the 3 guards who replaced the previous 3 guards are close to POA or rebounding like their predecessors, so they continued to be exploited and were winning against nonshooting teams off talent alone.
That first game after firing Griffin, I saw all three bigs back to Bud's DROP principle. But our two initiators weren't on their game and creating open shots and inspiring the ball to keep moving. As soon as Merrill checked in, he got 3-4 clean releases and the Bucks started blitzing HIM and dropping on everyone else.
We've got to counter them going back to Bud Drop D ball
