2023 Browns Training Camp Thread: Going to the Hall of Fame

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let's just start with: we aren't cutting him. He's one of the best corners in the league and he'll be back.

That being said, after next year, he only has 19M guaranteed (from his signing bonus). If you cut a player after June 1, you can spread his cap hit out over two years, so it would be 9.5M in 2025 and 2026.
Im thinking more about the possibility that ward misses months at a time with new concussions

He’s one of the best corners in the nfl but like how much longer can we really keep doing this? Similarly with Tua at a certain point you just have to throw in the towel. Multiple concussions a year and missing multiple weeks with them (increased severity from earlier in his career) is about as alarming as you can get

Eta: thanks for the numbers as well, very helpful

Optimist take: Ward pays attention, gets tested and diagnosed. There are lots of concussions in football and most of them don't ever get diagnosed. By being on top of them, Ward allows his body to rest and reduces the long-term impact as much as possible. He should be able to play longer than people who ignore their concussions.

Sniff... sniff... don't mind the smell of bullshit coming off that post

The decision on playing a guy with 3 concussions of note in a very meaningless game isn't getting enough coverage?

Who's to say he doesn't get #4 in the opener, I know. There's certain players you just protect at all costs. Deshaun arguably should play 1-2 series.

Chubb, Ward, Garrett should never suit up in a pre-season game at this juncture of their career. If they are to unfortunately get hurt, do it in the real games.

How many snaps did he play?

It's less than a game. It's probably less than a 5% increase in risk--and if you start saying that pre-season results in injuries, therefore we protect our best players, what message does that send to everyone else? "Fuck you and your health. You're expendable"?

I'm okay with having our starting secondary play a bit in the preseason after how bad their communication was last year.

I don't find it reasonable to play the big money corner regardless. Game 1 should be his first game. So message to everyone else, big money players sits, unless you're the QB and want to find your rhythm running the entire show, that's acceptable. Which then means the OL should play.

Risky players, that's risky business as we see.

I'm also of the thought that the coaching staff isn't to blame for Ward getting the concussion against KC.

If a player, who has a history of concussions, can't play a game without getting one, perhaps it's *him* that has the issue. He, clearly, needs to change how he plays. He was likely to get one in the first few weeks, so perhaps it's better to get it now than later?

Why play him game 1?

You need him to win in the playoffs. Maybe keep him healthy by only playing him half the year?

The starters are already sitting out nearly the entire preseason. I don't have anything against them playing just a small amount to shake off some rust.

Can someone who understands dead cap and contracts explain how difficult it would be to maneuver around the Ward deal? Is it going to be a black cloud over us for years or can we finesse out of it?
it will be easy to get out of after the 2025 season, at that point 11 mill of dead cap, so he will be costly for 3 years if he plays or note.

If he retires, he is still owed the money we guranteed, so its still 3 years and he isnt playing. If its medical reasons, we probably have an insurance policty that pays, but its still a cap hit.

The one caveat is if we ask for the prorated bonus back if he retires and the aribitrator agrees with us, then we are out of the contract. Not a good look for a guy that has only played for the Browns and retired for getting his brains beat in.

Basically lets hope he plays for 3 more years at a high level. Win/win.
