Revisiting and thus far grading last year's draft..

3rd-68- Martin Emerson. A. Emerson has been the Browns best CB this year and is coming off his best game of the season. Tremendous value for the early 3rd

3rd-78- Alex Wright. F. Continually looks overmatched and has had plenty of opportunities

3rd-99- David Bell. C-. Hasn't done much to stand out and looks no where within striking distance of challenging DPJ for the WR2 spot. Maybe we see more with Watson

4th-108- Perrion Winfrey. F. This pick is especially disappointing because Winfrey looked like maybe a steal if he could get his head on straight. Instead he's been in the dog house and hasn't done anything to stand out among an awful DT group

4th-124- Cade York. D+. Not giving up on the guy because the leg talent is certainly there, but lowest FG% in the NFL of kickers with at least 10 attempts. Saved the day Week 1 but it's been mostly downhill from there. Given his draft spot, people where hoping for McPherson 2.0 and he hasn't come close to that.

5th-156. Jerome Ford
6th-202. Michael Woods
7th-223. Isaiah Thomas
7th-246. Dawson Deaton

Don't really feel fair grading these guys. Ford has been hurt and buried on a deep depth chart but should see opportunity next year. Has had a few good returns.

I'm still where I was during the draft. The only picks I liked this year were Emerson and Ford.

I personally would've just drafted Josh Paschal at 44 instead of trading out for 68, 108 and 124--but that would've left us without Emerson and with a defensive end who's been out the entire year with an injury.

I also would've traded 156 and 78 away to move up to 75 and taken Travis Jones--which meant no Jerome Ford.

I would've taken a tight end (Ruckert) at 99 and then not had a pick until 202, and in the end of the draft I was looking at guys like Matt Henningsen, Bo Melton, Kellen Diesch, Armani Rogers, Justyn Ross, Verone McKinley, Tannner Conner and Isaiah Weston.

It's still to be seen which class comes out ahead--but if we go Andrew Berry's route, there are two small moves that I won't ever forgive him for.
  1. Selecting a kicker at 124. I don't care how good you think the kicker is in college--drafting kickers isn't wise. Nugent, Crosby, I don't care how good they are--kickers are too random to waste a draft pick on. Pick 124 should've been Zach Tom, and I bet Tom would've beaten out Hudson to be our third tackle right now--or beat out Froholdt to be starting at center.
  2. Not bringing in Armani Rogers as a priority UDFA. Rogers could've been that diamond in the rough you develop as another tight end in Njoku's role. He was right in your back yard and you never even showed interest.

David Bell and Jerome Ford have been good when called on.

I'm not sure it's gonna happen, but I'd like to give some of Hunt's snaps to Ford.

Would love to see how he is as a blocker and a receiver before the end of the year since he's definitely going to be here next year and Hunt is not.

I have a sneaky suspicion that now that Deshaun Watson is back we'll see more packages with both Chubb and Hunt on the field which will create more opportunities for Ford in situations where it would've just been Hunt.

I'm not going to pretend like I watch pass blocking when I watch the little film of running backs that I occasionally get to. I watch them run and that's about it.

But, I feel pretty confident in the pass blocking ability of any Alabama RB. I don't see a reason why Ford would be an exception. Saban teaches them well down there, and his time in Cincinnati shouldn't change that.

Bama RB's can pass protect. Bama safeties can process complex assignments. Those are "scout the helmet" sins that I feel very comfortable making.

Feels needlessly harsh on Wright. He's a pretty good run defender who needs work on getting the pass rush figured out.

Pro Football Reference has him playing at 48.85% of the Browns defensive snaps (more than Clowney due to injuries) with 0 QB hurries, 0 QB knockdowns, and 0 sacks. When I watch him, he gets stonewalled on pretty much every drop back and the stats seems to back that up.

I'll take your word on the run defense part- not being snarky- just not something I've paid much attention to or have stats to back up.

I'm shocked that he's played nearly half of our snaps. I haven't really noticed him at all out there. I would've guessed 10-20%.

I remember coming out that the knocks on him were that he's stiff and lacks the bend to produce on the edge at the next level. Based off his pass rush metrics, it sounds like those scouting reports were accurate.

Gotta remember that Garrett missed a game, Clowney and Thomas have missed 3 games apiece and Winovich missed 9 games.

Wright's snaps are probably quite a bit higher than they would have been otherwise.
