2023 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Being on the list(s) gives the Guardians a partial motive to include him on the OD Roster.. sure..but, not a very influential motive...
I agree with you, as an extra year of guaranteed service time is far more significant than potential draft pick compensation.

Forces you to keep him in the minors longer if that is what you are valuing.

It's either he makes the roster out of ST and he is down until July. There can be no in between or the risk increases 10-fold.

It looks like we do have an opening at 1B/DH along with Naylor. If that's not Manzardo - then who is it? DDLS? I would far rather work out a trade for DDLS and let him develop in MiLB.
Especially if we can get a bonus draft pick (or international pick) with Manzardo.

Oh, that's interesting. I thought that the club would save an extra year of service time if Manzardo is brought up either in late April or May?

Let's say we bring him up then he really plays well and gets a ROY... He would get a full service year... So it's out of spring for the draft pick compensation try or past a certain date like they did with Naylor... Can't chance in the middle...

He doesn’t even have to win ROTY.

Just needs to finish top 2.

The risk you now face holding a top prospect down until the service time cutoff date is it’s more than enough time for a guy to play well enough and long enough to still lose a full year of service time.

So it’s nice the new rules see more top prospects on Opening Day rosters. But it will also force teams to keep guys down for an extra month or 2 (or more) to avoid manipulating their service time and still losing that year of service regardless by the player playing well enough.

I think he will get the spot, but to me he has to earn it still...

But hence why in the future they either make it out of camp or they get called up in the second half... Nothing in between, unless it's an injury force and even then they may get a filler (Aka Calhoun) to stop gap...

Coach I love you but they literally just did the opposite with their top three SP prospects last year. Yes they were forces by injury but they did not hesitate to bring up the studs.

Remember that they tried Battenfield, Pilk, and Gaddis first …. Then injuries continued to mount and neither of these guys really stood out and then went Allen and Bibee.

Yes but if it was truly just about manipulation they would have waited.

The problem with holding Manzardo back for next year's ROY running is that he will likely be in direct competition with DeLauter or at least put DeLauter in the same position as he is in this year.

That's actually not true, what number of starter was Williams when he came up, what about 14? I don't believe the FO wanted Williams and Bibee up in 23, at least not losing their rookie eligibility in 23... They didn't have a choice in the matter cause injuries forced it and then since they did so well, they had to keep them up after that. Don't forget neither guy was invited to MLB camp...

I'm still baffled by the collapse of Battenfield.

See the example of Tanner Bibee in 2023.

Yes he arrived early due to injuries & ineffectiveness of those ahead of him but he pitched well enough to still finish 2nd in ROY voting. That got him a full year of service time as a reward from MLB. Please note that even if he had won the ROY, CLE would not have gotten a bonus pick because Bibee wasn't up the entire year..

There is no other award in baseball that has this many hoops to jump through just to qualify for consideration.. The most egregious is the tiny little hoop that requires a team's PR department lap the koolaid of the continuously wrong rating list providers.. For future reference.. the Guardians, as an organization, should ELIMINATE their prospects from that circus.. Any team's best prospects would be longshots to win the award/draft picks.. but EVERY team would be guaranteed to LOSE prospect control for one year of an already too short control period. This award skews value toward the more highly money'd organizations..

Thoughts?
