2024 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Line

And our QB currently is ok for this season

Again, I think Mclaughlin is going to be a positive for the line. I understand the optics with his snapping, but he is a good player. Once we know what position he’s playing maybe we can revisit.

I do think they seem to be leaning on intern development and gains for the rest of the line, though. So I think it’s definitely a valid concern still until we see more.

QB is also a concern to me mostly because it’s unknown. Will Howard is good… can he be great? Can Day unlock that next level in his game? Will the superior skill talent help elevate his play? All questions that could turn out great for OSU or Howard could end up just being a decent stopgap. Which wont be good enough for what we want to do UNLESS the run game suddenly takes off to levels we haven’t seen since 2020.

Tough to say.

Im excluding the TEs because I am Alicia Silverstone when it comes to that. But outside of that our top weaknesses seem 2 be 1.OL 2.QB 3.LB

QB more of a question mark, really. I have to think Howard will be an upgrade over McCord.

Not sure about that. Mccord played on KSU you’d never , ever have known who he was

Kind of depends on what Ohio State wants to do on offense.

I see the fit if OSU is going to switch to a pro style, power run type system that relies on PA and a lot of RPO concepts. His legs afford you opportunities, especially in the red zone, that can be really effective.

I’m more unsure of the fit if they are trying to run more of the vertical / crossing elements they have had such success with in the past. He has a really long delivery and doesn’t have the pure arm strength McCord does. He throws more of a floating ball, that lacks spin, especially downfield.

I see the “talent around him” argument a lot which isn’t untrue but he’s also going to play significantly better defenses in the B1G, that have far better athletes at each level. And it will be interesting if he can shift from game manager to more of an offensive engine at OSU.

What has separated that program prior to McCord, has been the ability of the QB to carry their scheme…..so it’s going to be pretty fascinating to see how a guy with a single 300 yard passing game in 33 career starts, steps in and tries to be something more than McCord was. Even looking at the 200 yard passing threshold, Howard has only done that 13 times in 33 career games.

Looking at Howard’s actual production, he’s much more in the dollar store JJ McCarthy mold than he is any of the other really talented throwers OSU has had recently. He manages the game, can use his legs but he’s never asked to spin the ball all over the place and carry the unit.

I thought it was a pretty interesting take by OSU given his production, scheme fit and the fact that he seemed to fall out of favor against what I think is lesser QB room comp than he’ll face at OSU.

Every QB is going to have a unique skill set in some way. And you arent going to have Fields and Stroud in your room every single year. The challenge will be unlocking in Will Howard that next level of play, and adapting to his skill set.

I keep saying this but Ohio State will need to learn how to be elite without an all time great at QB putting up video game numbers. They’ve done it many many times before, and other programs do it. Time to nut up.

Well just having a QB who can actually avoid a sack with his legs will help. Obviously you don't want to depend on that, but it will be an immediate improvement over McCord.

Also I think McCord has been propped up my Marvin Harrison Jr since high school. I don't think he is a 5 star QB without him. I also think he takes a nose dive in production without Harrison at the college level. If you look at McCord's highlights, you notice how many of the big plays go to Harrison and how good Harrison is. I'm not sure another WR in college football comes open, comes down with the catch, or catches the ball and get YAC, with so many of the throws from McCord.

I think a lot of programs weren't interested in McCord because there is a real question of how good he actually is especially if you take away MHJ and Cade Stover. Both those guys are making catches that not many other receiver can make.

Which makes it even more alarming why Day preferred him over McCarthy. I need someone to tell me MHJ and McCord were a package deal and we only took McCord to get MHJ to make me feel better about it.

Also, taking Evan Pryor over Donovan Edwards was another one. Same class too. McCarthy and Edwards would've both came to OSU over Michigan and they allowed them to go north and well, the rest is history.

McCord was the one who committed first by like 6 months before Marvin Harrison Jr does. Marvin Harrison Jr wasn't as highly ranked as McCord. MHJ was #149 overall and 21 for WR by 247. For Rivals he was #89 overall and 15 for WR. McCord was #49 overall on 247 and #35 overall on rivals. McCord was the one of the reasons why Marvin Harrison Jr decides to commit to Ohio State.

I think the underrating of Harrison made McCord look better than he was.
