2024 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Have to imagine this would be the end of Conference Championship Games

lessen the regular season by 2 games and expand the playoff field to 24 teams wgaf

Would that be 2 buy teams then?

We are just in the last couple seasons seeing a little parity at the top and my hope would be an expanded playoff field increasing that. But switching to a bloated playoff model is not what I’ve hoped for at any point.

Happy to switch back to regular season conference champs, though. Divisions were a mistake and an expanded playoff field makes it matter less and less.

Well, probably a lot of the fans and players of teams that want to watch/play football, and who don't want to see their seasons shortened by two games.

Might as well go to 68 like basketball while we’re at it

I miss the BCS days.

I mean, why not just have a double elimination tournament beginning game one of the season? As soon as you lose two games, yer out!

Just amazing how bad conference realignment and the chasing of money by schools and conferences have fucked everything up so badly. Had the NCAA put in place a legitimate playoff system 15-20 years ago, the sport would be in such a better place right now.

NIL and the transfer portal have messed some things up, but those are kind of just a consequence of the money grabs made by schools. Had a playoff been in place years ago, I don't think you see the shattering of conferences like we have. I think you see conferences sticking together more as the media deals and everything else aren't quite as consequential to them being able to compete at a higher level.

Case in point. The Mountain West Conference.
  • Utah
  • Boise State
  • TCU
  • BYU
  • Nevada
  • Air Force
  • Fresno State
  • New Mexico
  • SDSU
  • Wyoming
  • UNLV
If that conference had a playoff they could get into back in the 00's, I don't think it ever splits up. They would've had the chance to make some noise, and it would've remained a good conference with regional ties that could grow.

Instead, we get the current monstrosity going on. Joy.

Tough sell that more meaningful football is bad.

Should one regular season loss ruin a season for every team in the nation, is that a fair balance of importance between regular season and postseason?

Instead of flowing the same 4-6 teams through, it’s more meaningful for fans, coaches and players to stay locked in for the season knowing there is still a chance they don’t have to play in a bowl game where a Pop Tarts is summarily executed.

Instead, their late season games ALL matter and the weekly slate is more diverse and meaningful.

The belief that the regular season matters less makes no sense, it means so much more for about 8-10 more teams (and their opponents) depending on where they land.

I guess, but the fact that ND gets an auto-bid in this scenario if they finish in the top 14 would lead me to believe a lot of fuckery is going to happen. What does ND have to do to qualify every year? They’ll play USC, Navy, their 4-6 ACC games. As long as they lose no more than 2-3 games, they can schedule no one the rest of the year and make it without playing a conference championship game.

Okay? That’s a pretty reasonable schedule.

Seems extreme and a bit far fetched, but good luck to them getting through that gauntlet of a post season.

If that is the trade off for basically all of the Top 25 having late season playoff implications, seems fair.

I generally view most of the expansion talk as merely producing ad on revenue via a made for TV product.

In reality, only 4-6 teams can realistically win a title each season……just due to a variety of factors but the larger the pool, the more brand names they’ll have in.

I don’t necessarily want to just reward “brands” but if the expansion of additional teams more consistently guarantees the ND’s get in, then kind of so be it. I personally want to see Notre Dame match up with Michigan, Ohio State, etc, etc….and play more than they do. And expanded playoff will provide that more often.

Does Notre Dame still bring in ratings? They havent' been good in years and the draw of being the Catholic school doesn't seem to be as big

Still a brand big enough that they are comfortable with their own media deal instead of joining a conference. Ohio State's matchup this season was the highest rated game of that week and the 9th of 2023 (including playoff games in January).

What's the threshold for good here? Playoff team in 21, 10 wins this last season. Championship contention tends to be a small club in college football.
