2024 Season | Series #12 | Tigers @ Guardians | May 6-8, 2024

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It is maddening that managers tend to ignore pitchers' reverse splits, but look at it from his point of view. He usually fills his lineup card with batters who hit opposite handed pitching better.

Which stat overrides the other?

If you have a batter who can't hit same handed pitching with a tennis racket vs a pitcher that offers up batting practice to same handed batters, you usually go with what you know best, with what you witness every day.

Example: Do you want to see Laureano or Brennan in the lineup tomorrow?
brennan yes.. laureano.. no..

But my issue with Vogt in this game was going to the weakest link in the pen up 2 runs and 2 runners on. I don't care that it is the 3rd inning, you have to try to keep the lead. Put in a better arm that puts out the fire or only allows the runner on 3B to score and then go to Avila to eat innings.

I don't wanna hear how he did ok for a mop up arm, because we were leading. I don't want mop up ahead 2 runs. Vogt relied on Avila way too much in this game and I hope Eli replaces him soon.

Guess I would like to know who you would have brought in. The 3-4 logical choices are who? Sandlin, Herrin, Smith and Gaddis .... Gaddis has struggled as of late (why put him in to pressure situation). Herrin and Smith both let a run in like Avila last night, so in hindsight would they have done better? Maybe ... but again Maybe not. Sandlin was then the one left but he went the night before too for 1-1/3 (thus can't go today if he pitched even if we may or may not be up later in game). And, with Sandlin, he has only gone back-2-back once this year went he threw 18 pitches or more (did 19 night before). Hentges hasn't done a back-2-back yet in his rehab. Right now we are #4 in pen usage ... (Tampa has 1 more game and Dodgers still have 2 from their early start and then Miami in first). Thus, we would all want someone more than Avila-- even Morgan or Karinchak. But, we are stuck for now with long-term best interest of pen usage maybe trumping what could have been a win 6 innings later.

What an ugly game. Had a chance but we continually shoot ourselves in the foot on the basepaths and on defense. We're forcing our pitchers to get 30 outs a game and giving the opposing team a free out or two with brain dead baserunning.

Gotta tighten up.

Yeah the bullpen is under too much stress, mainly because guys like Allen have been so bad. The solution would be more reliable starters but they don't appear out of thin air.

Yeah I mean there really isn't a great solution right now. Pray Gavin can pitch by June 1 basically?

Under a different set of circumstances, Allen's performance would have already earned him a bus ticket back to Columbus, but there's just no one else to replace him right now. Curry has gotten bombed three starts in a row in Columbus.

Not thin air but the minors. When playing PovertyBall, solutions come from within. Look, we know this year isn't the Contending One. The great start was awesome and hopefully/likely it's building towards something, but that something is going to come to full fruition Next Year or The Year After That. For now? Yeah, they have to shuffle some deck chairs to help out the quality guys in the pen.

How about when we struck out a batter on a slider in the dirt? Bo blocked it but the ball rolled between his legs and stopped inches behind his left foot. No big deal, just pick up the ball and lob it to first. But Bo decided to stand up first and kicked the ball several feet behind him. He picked it up in plenty of time but being five feet behind home plate he had no angle and his throw hit the runner in the back, putting him on second base and moving the runner on first to third.

So frustrating. I'm also getting tired of every Bo throw to second being in the dirt. Not to mention his .178 batting average. But all we can do is stay the course and hope he improves.

Avila did a good job going three innings. He gave up a bloop off the end of the bat to score Allen's runners, but it was a good pitch. With starters like Allen and Carrasco we're going to need a long man and maybe Avila can be that guy.

Our problem was getting no runs off their bullpen in seven innings. We only got three hits.

The bigger issue is Allen sucks. Two good starts out of seven so far and an ERA just under 7.00.

We got a different lineup today... Hedges with the start.

I get that, just our solutions from within are looking pretty bleak, even a few years down the road. Who do we have starter-wise? I think the best we can hope for is someone like Cantillo figures something out but he looks a distance away, compounded by the injury. Our other options are mostly getting blasted like Dion and Curry, or are too far away. Maybe Messick can rise in the minors quickly enough but I don't even see him being there in 2025 honestly.

No Tom today? Might just listen to some tunes instead while having the TV muted.

I didn't watch the game....when Bo hit the runner in the back did it deflect away to allow the runners to advance?
