2024 Season | Series #12 | Tigers @ Guardians | May 6-8, 2024

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Flo works the count to full... and sends a can of corn to medium deep LF.. Game over..

Don't know what to make of Allen, he's had two good starts out of seven and his ERA is 6.41. He needs almost pinpoint command to be effective and he wasn't even close tonight.

Vogt was asked between innings about Manzardo and he said Kyle was "a little passive". Ya think? He sure takes a lot of strikes. Like I said yesterday, somebody needs to tell him he's in the bigs and up here pitchers can throw strikes in any count. You can't just take four pitches and be up 3-1 every time. But after starting his career with five K's he finally put a couple of balls in play.

Andy Ibanez, 31 years old and a lifetime .262/.710 hitter with less than 800 career at-bats, is hitting like Aaron Judge in his prime. Two homers, and double, a single, and a walk. He's 1-for-11 this year against righties and hitting .450 against lefties.

Game 3 preview:

Another rubber match with Tanner Bibee facing off against Reese Olson, a 24-year-old right-hander. Olson has been pitching in some very tough luck as he is 0-4 despite a 2.70 ERA. He has allowed four earned runs in his last four starts but the Tigers lost them all, scoring four runs.

This could be another pitcher's duel. He has not faced the Guardians. He has a strong reverse split with right-handers hitting .322/.761 off him while lefties are at .145/.438. I keep waiting for a manager to stack the batting order with right-handers against a right-handed pitcher with reverse splits, but they stick to the conventional wisdom no matter what the numbers say.

Olson was 5-7 with a 3.99 ERA as a rookie last year.

Bibee is off to a disappointing start with a 4.46 ERA. However, two starts ago he shut out the Braves on 2 hits for seven innings and I thought he had figured out what was wrong. Apparently not, because in his last start he got blasted for six runs in five innings against the Angels.

Jose has five hits in his last 11 at-bats including two home runs and five RBI's. But he made a boneheaded baserunning error, getting thrown out at 3rd on a grounder to short. How long are we going to keep doing that? First Bo, then Josh, then Jose. I thought every Little Leaguer knew you had to stay at second on a ground ball to the left side.

Josh is also emerging from his slump with five hits in the last four games plus three walks. He's hit two home runs and driven in four. Good to see. With Kwan out we need Jose and Josh to be raking.

Brennan continues to get meaningful hits. Tonight's hit drove in two runs and temporarily gave us the lead. He has a knack for that lately.

It is maddening that managers tend to ignore pitchers' reverse splits, but look at it from his point of view. He usually fills his lineup card with batters who hit opposite handed pitching better.

Which stat overrides the other?

If you have a batter who can't hit same handed pitching with a tennis racket vs a pitcher that offers up batting practice to same handed batters, you usually go with what you know best, with what you witness every day.

Example: Do you want to see Laureano or Brennan in the lineup tomorrow?

Reese Olson has weird splits so far in his young career. Lots more K's and BB's against lefties, and ultimately the BB's seem to be more of the factor. Lefties do have a much lower AVG/SLG though. It makes me think that he hasn't developed great control of his slider, though he is extra hard to hit when he is able to locate it. His changeup also appears to be a good pitch, which is common in pitchers with reverse splits.

Always a bitter loss when you smoke the opposing starter out after 2 innings and 7 runs.

Bringing back Allen for the 3rd is defensible, he gave him another chance and he continued to fold.

But my issue with Vogt in this game was going to the weakest link in the pen up 2 runs and 2 runners on. I don't care that it is the 3rd inning, you have to try to keep the lead. Put in a better arm that puts out the fire or only allows the runner on 3B to score and then go to Avila to eat innings.

I don't wanna hear how he did ok for a mop up arm, because we were leading. I don't want mop up ahead 2 runs. Vogt relied on Avila way too much in this game and I hope Eli replaces him soon.

Blew our best chance at a comeback down 1 in the 5th inning after the Jose double to lead off. Another base running blunder and bad BABIP luck (Brennan 101 EV, 440 xBA hard hit double play) quickly ended this opportunity.

Come back with a strong Bibee start and take the series today. Just win series
