Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Says the guy who lead a one man crusade against The World Cup and Soccer in general for the entire month of June

:chuckles:

The World Cup is my own personal Viet Nam Rchfld. I shouldn't be involved, but I'm in too deep to quit fighting. Let me have this.

Look, I'm over LeBron bouncing. What I'm not over is the current state of the game I grew up playing , the game I have watched since I was 8 years old.

Are you a fan of the Cavs or are you a fan of basketball and the Cavs happen to be the team you root for? If it's the former, then I understand why you would let it go.

LeMoron's actions will eventually have repercussions on the NBA. And if there is a lockout, the NBA could lose many fans. The World Cup and NHL Finals have proven that the Big 3 sports aren't the only that can attract a large audience.

Here's some numbers:

TV Ratings Sunday: NBA Finals And NHL Stanley Cup Finals Both Up From Last Year

Posted on 07 June 2010 by Bill Gorman

Due to the nature of live programming the ratings for ABC (NBA Finals) and NBC (NHL Stanley Cup Finals) are approximate and subject to significant revisions in the final numbers. See below for more information on these Fast Affiliate Ratings.
Scoreboard ABC NBC FOX CBS Uni
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 4.5/13 1.9/6 1.4/4 1.1/3 0.5/2
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 4.6/15 1.5/5 1.6/5 0.5/2 0.5/2
Total Viewers (million) 11.086 5.238 3.398 6.554 1.443

While the primetime portions of game 2 of the NBA Finals ratings towered over those of game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals the hockey game had the bigger increase vs. last season. The primetime portion of the Celtics / Lakers game was up 6% from last year’s game 2, and the Blackhawks / Flyers game was up 33%.

The primetime portion of the NBA Finals Game 2 on ABC between the Lakers & Celtics scored a 5.0 adults 18-49 rating from 8-11pm. That was up 6% from the fast affiliate ratings last year’s Game 2 (Orlando Magic vs. LA Lakers), which posted a 4.7/14 from 8-11p in the Fast Nationals before rising to a 5.8/17 from 8-11:12p in the Finals.

Here is more detail from ABC’s press release:

According to Nielsen’s special-ordered program-based “Fast National” ratings, the “NBA Finals on ABC – GM 2” overcame its competitors during primetime, including NBC’s broadcast of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, to qualify as Sunday night’s No. 1 TV program in Total Viewers (15.5 million) and across each of the key adult demographics: A18-34 (6.4 rating), A18-49 (6.3 rating) and A25-54 (6.3 rating). It was the 2nd straight telecast for the 2009 NBA Finals to stand as the night’s top-rated television program in viewers and key adults. The Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers by a score of 101-96, tying the best-of-seven series at 1-1

* ABC’s Game 2 of the 2010 NBA Finals posted solid year-to-year increases in Total Viewers (+1.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (+9%), over the second game of the 2009 Lakers-Orlando Finals (14.1 million & 5.8/17 on 6/7/09). In viewers and young adults, it was the strongest Game 2 for the NBA Championship Series in 6 years and the second-highest-ever on ABC – since Game 2 of the 2004 series on 6/8/04. ABC began carriage of the NBA Finals starting in 2003.

The primetime portion of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals Game 5 on NBC between the Blackhawks & Flyers cored a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating from 8-11pm. That was up 33% from the fast affiliate ratings for last year’s Game 5 (Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Red Wings on Saturday 6/6/09), which posted a 1.6/6 in the Fast Nationals before rising to a 1.8/7 in the Finals.
Prior to the game on ABC, the Jimmy Kimmel Game Night special drew a 2.6 adults 18-49 rating, and the NBA pre-game special drew a 3.4 rating.

Prior to the game on NBC, the Making of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter drew just a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating, and a half hour Dateline NBC drew a 1.2 rating.

My view:

Post NBA Lockout could see the NHL as a true competitor for the first time in the league's respective history, especially if a team like the Boston Bruins or New York Rangers can make the finals. NHL is more popular than NBA in Beantown. Rangers are hugh in NYC.

If America can produce a number of homegrown hockey superstars and they end up in the right markets (no Canadian teams) NHL could beat out the NBA.

Bottomline-NBA is in trouble, following numerous scandals from coach strangling (Latrell), fan pummelling (Ron Artest), high-profile rape charge, gun-related charges, wife-beating allegations, and LeBacle easy to see why its image is at an all-time low. Its becoming increasingly difficult for fans to relate to the players for these reasons and the fact they make a king's ransom in salary. What with NBA's Hip Hop Gangsta image these days, it no wonder that mainstream audiences are starting to tune out.

This is just how it is. You can control your own basketball playing, but not that of the WWENBA.
Actually you can, just like all the other people watching NBA games (be it on the TV or in the arena), buying NBA gear, talking about the NBA, etc...

If a lot of NBA customers quit doing those things, I assure you the NBA would look different

While Stern is loving the attention, no doubt, he certainly cannot like anything that resembles lack of parody. It will dilute the game to unprecedented measures.

I'm not smart enough to figure out how to change it, but these recent actions could potentially ruin basketball for a long time, at least for me.

I'm pretty sure Stern is well aware of the parody of sport that is becoming the NBA.

In order to get parity the NBA will need to put in a much harder cap. Here's hoping the lockout solves this.

:chuckles: good catch
