A Closer Look at Andrew Wiggins

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm making sure to also sell myself on Parker just in case. I can go on and on about the abilities he opens up with isolation scoring and his ability to set a pick for Kyrie and then score from literally anywhere.

But I'm firmly in the Wiggins camp from this point on.

When he goes to the rim, I want to see him shooting layups instead of dunking. I want to see him go glass and shoot floaters/touch shots, finishing from a greater distance than just at the rim. That and his handle are what he should be working on the most right now.

I'm already sold on Parker, but hearing about the type of offense Blatt wants to run, complete with ball movement, backdoor cuts, and overall lots of movement, Wiggins sounds like the pick. His knack for finding lanes and making plays off the ball is going to be huge.

I'm sold on both Parker and Wiggins. As long as we dont trade the pick I'll be happy Thursdsay night.

I honestly really like both of the top two prospects. The difference is, when I ask who I would hate the most to pass on, it's Wiggins. He's not the guy I want the most today, but he's the one I want the most in 3 years.

Using a workout video to judge handles isn't a good idea. Harrison looks like a pretty competent ball handler in that video. On the court he looks very timid to do anything other than a straight line drive or one dribble pull up.

Handles without defense don't mean anything. It's all about reacting to the defense, something which Wiggins hasn't really shown.

On NBA TV, Stu Jackson mentioned that in the NCAA tournament, Wiggins was guarded by someone who had plus lateral quickness and that Wiggins didn't show an ability to create in that situation. Jackson also questioned if Wiggins has the 'alpha' dog mentally required to be the superstar leader.

One of the other panelists on the show said he thought Wiggins would not be ready to contribute significantly early in the season and that it would be imperative for the coaching staff to work with him mentally so he doesn't go into a funk.

Yeah, those are his two main knocks(him being able to fully utilize his amazing athleticism due to his weak handle, and of course his tendency to disappear and just fit in). Blatt I think could really help him as far as confidence and keeping him engaged.

I take this workout video with a grain of salt. This isn't Yi Jianlian going against a chair but a tiny slow white guy is nothing compared to a real NBA defender. It seems that he has improved but it is a highlight video for a reason. My biggest take away: he didn't suffer a fracture in his foot while making this video.

Has to be Wiggins. There is a reason he separated himself during their HS careers. Wiggins didn't dominate college, but he did DARN well for a freshman. Combine that with his upside and immediate defense---he is the easy choice. Wiggins can be a Top-5 player. He has that ability. Jabari just doesn't.

We're getting a little redundant with the repeated claimed critiques of Wiggins, so it must be draft time. Here's my summary response:

--Claimed lack of alpha dog. Not sure what this even means. Does it mean chest thumping? Throat slashing? Blowing in another player's ear? Yelling at refs? How's back to back games in March of 40 and 30 points? Enough alpha dog for you? Please describe the alpha dog in Tim Duncan or the Finals MVP, Kawhi. I remember watching LeBron in his rookie year, standing in the corner, watching. Should we have released him then?

--Claimed poor handles. Okay. Fixable. Again, LeBron had weak handles coming out (and could not shoot) and still has difficulty with them. He overcompensates by using his off hand as a stiff arm to ward off defenders. This can be learned.

--He'll learn to shoot better, dribble better. You can't teach his off the charts athleticism. Picture LeBron without his athleticism and what do you have? Again, LeBron got better shooting, dribbling. Meanwhile, no matter what you do, Parker won't be able to improve his athleticism, other than maybe dropping some pounds.

I favor Wiggins. As a player, as a fit.

My only fear is Danny Gilbert and Griffin panic and take Parker because they think he is a safer pick, and better helps Dan's edict to "win now".

Griffin may want to play it safe to keep his job, but sometimes playing it safe can cost him his job if he just passed on the next Jordan.

How does Jabari not have top 5 ability? Have you seen the guy play? The dude has a higher basketball IQ than Wiggins, can use both hands and has several very good offensive moves, on top of having a grown mans body. He is no slouch as an athlete either.
