Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Duke had 6 touches for 109 yards

He may go his entire career without being properly utilized at this rate. I mean we’re 5 years in now

Duke and Landry should be two guys that get the most touches in every game. Then my list in order would be Hyde, Chubb, Devalve, Njoku, then Callaway.

I would make Hyde lead block for Duke at times and use both of them as receivers when we go wide especially on early downs. Duke should be top 2-3 in snaps.

I would also try to get Devalve involved more. He was pretty effective last year when we put him out wide. Devalve is more sure handed than Njoku. Him and Duke really should be safety blankets for Baker.

Rough game all the way around today. These days are bound to happen with a rookie QB. The Chargers had s good defensive scheme and the thin receiving corps doesn't help.

Hopefully this can go down as a learning experience and Baker can grow from it. They'll have to counter what the Chargers did or else other teams will do the same thing until we do figure it out.

I'm praying to god I don't have to hear the "HURR DURR SHOULD HAVE TAKEN DARNOLD" from a certain segment of the fanbase soon.

because I am seeing already some of these shitbirds chime in with those takes and it's about to drive me insane.

You have to give a young QB a chance to be successful. They gave up on the run too damn early and it gave the defense a chance to pin their ears at back. A rookie QB shouldn’t be putting the ball in the air twice as many times as he hands it off.

Baker wasn’t good today and that’s ok. He’s a rookie.

He held the ball far too long and took too many sacks. He looked like Tyrod did before the benching.

Sure, we have no one getting open. There are issues in protection. But he needs to hit his checkdowns.

Browns had 3 ot games out of 5. The other 2 was a 4 point win and a 3 point loss.

My first concern regarding this game was not Baker Mayfield but The Browns giving up 7.3yards per carry on 18 attempts.

Chargers gave the Baker some looks he hadn't seen yet and the coverage/pressure was pretty good.

Baker on the topic

“They played a lot of zone coverage. Their change-up was throwing in man and blitzing. Just playing zone coverage. They did a good job of passing off receivers and stuff like that, but I have to find my check downs and I have to get the ball out of my hands. It doesn't matter what they are doing. I have to do my job.” – QB Baker Mayfield

Baker was holding on the ball cause he wasn't sure if guys were open or not and that caused him to hesitate on his checkdowns.

Baker though seems the type of qb that exaggerates his deficiencies to protect his teammates . his time to throw (2.86) for the season in comparison to his time to throw for this game was 2.91

BTW Tyrod Taylors time to throw this season was 2.87.

Aggresiveness % (throwing into tight windows) for the season is 17.6 compared to 26.1 for todays game.

I see the proverbial rookie wall mentioned and defenses catching on to QB quirks as the typically the same thing for the most point.

Seems Baker recognizes that getting to his check downs faster is what he needs to focus on.

You get what you get.

Mayfield has always been this guy to some extent, but the level to which he’s done no favors in this organization is criminal.

Part of why I was so fearful to take him. Well, maybe why anyone should be fearful of this organization.

It just wears on you.

Go on...

A rookie QB played like a rookie QB. We knew these games were bound to happen, even after his hot start. Let's not act completely shocked when they do happen.

"When the global war was over and the dust had settled on the capricious land they all must now re-build home from, there he was like a beacon of stability. @AZ_ was there, unharmed, ready to tell you "I told you so"."

:chuckle:

One of Bakers strong points is his mobility. I think when he tweaked his ankle it did affect him. I believe: 1) He did not want to come out. 2.) He did not want to mess his ankle up worse. The receivers sucked ass yesterday. What was a strong unit is now a glaring weakness. The coaching was idiotic. Throw the ball 40 times when you have running backs that can carry the load. No Baker did not play well. However, my God he got very little help if any at all. This coaching staff has relied too much on Baker his first couple games and can not adjust if he has a bad game.

He was playing like ass before the injury. I just think he had a bad/off game. He didn’t even seem to be his charismatic self.
