Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Kind of reminds me of how Kenny Lofton hiked up to the top of mountain and screamed at the top of his lungs after he lost the AL Rookie of the Year award to Pat Listach. His career turned out rather nicely...

Who is Pat Listach, you might ask? Exactly.

Don't forget Bob Hamelin over Manny Ramirez in 1994.

If Barkley had been some 2nd or 3rd rounder and had this type of breakout year, I could see Baker still winning it. But with all of the college and pre-draft hype that Barkley had, I have a sinking feeling that he may end up winning it to justify all the hype from the talking heads.

Or Correa over Lindor... And everyone with a brain knew/knows who the better player is.

Accolades that are voted on are quickly becoming less valuable than toilet paper. Some of the best defenders in the history of the nba never won a dpoy. Steve Nash has no business being a multi mvp, derrick rose has no business being an mvp. Chris Paul should have an mvp trophy in his case.

These awards are voted on by the media. Sports media has generally just been awful with probably only a handful of guys you would actually feel comfortable voting on this stuff.

I just felt sort of meh about it.

It's indeed a position I've seen people able to find productivity out of in later rounds (or even undrafted in the case of The Broncos, Phillip Lindsey) I don't exactly feel the need to trip over myself to give you the award.

Also it felt like the Giants barely improved with him running the ball. They improved by two wins. That's it. They still finished last in the division. There were never discussions about them being in the playoffs or even hovering around .500

Reminds me of the Simpsons gag where Homer wants to be John Elway

I would see him put up good numbers, and make these awesome runs while the Giants would still be getting killed.

I mean, it's not like a popular vote is any better.

If you watched hard Knocks, who was coming in and putting in the time setting the tone for baker? Was it Drew Stanton? No, it wasn’t. It was Taylor and if we needed to pay a guy 17 m and trade a 3rd round pick for baker to learn he has to put in the time to be good/elite then so be it.

I didn't see Hard Knocks, but that fact, nor what was represented on the tv show, would change my position on the GM's intentions for making the deal in the first place.

Likely Taylor was simply being a good leader and teammate by helping the rook, as at that point he had good reason to be secure in his own position (i.e. the support of the GM and Head Coach as the starter for the season opener)

New York athlete wins media based award over more deserving Cleveland athlete?

Shocking

I am not sure Baker is more deserving though. I get he had a historical year, but Barkley was pretty amazing too.

Lamar consideration is the one that is a huge insult to Baker.

Edit, to be clear I think it should be co-winners, both are equally deserving.

Baker had arguably the best rookie season for a QB ever

Barkley has a very good rookie season, but there is no argument for the best rookie season for a RB ever

Lee I don’t get your stance on this at all my dude. Baker had a relatively better season at a position that is leaps and bounds more important

I don’t even think it’s close who the ROY was

Dickerson had 1800 yards rushing and 400 yards receiving and its considered the best rookie rb season ever, true.

But he also had 4.6 yards a carry vs the 5.0 that Barkley had. Barkley had 500 less yards rushing, but 300 more receiving. Barkley had 15 TDs vs 20 for Dickerson.

But my point is that in the 80's it was a very RB heavy league and starting RB's typically got the vast majority of the carries. Barkley did this in an era when RB isn't nearly as important and the numbers are pretty close.

I am just saying this is closer than you are making it out. Barkley was the third best RB while Mayfield was somewhere between 10-15.

The whole reason we are saying Baker over Barkley is because of the importance of the position, but if we are making that argument which is valid, you have to point out that during Dickerson's rookie year, they ran the ball a ton more and the position had more value back then.

Just being a counter argue point because while I have Baker ahead of Barkley, its not by much.

Looking at past "greatest rookie RBs" per a list I'm skimming over

Ickey Woods in 1988
Warrick Dunn in 1997
Terrell Davis in 1995
Adrian Peterson in 2007
Eddie George in 1996
Jerome Bettis in 1993
LaDanian Tomlinson in 2001
Marshall Faulk in 1994
Curtis Martin in 1995
Barry Sanders in 1989
Edgerin James in 1999.
