Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He graded well for them, but if you read their actual scouting report on him it outlines his issues, including arm strength, a regression from 2014 to 2015, his inconsistency under pressure, and his middling measurables.

It's why you can't just look at the PFF number assigned to a player in a vacuum. A high grade doesn't always mean a player is a lock to be a good NFL player. It simply means they were very productive in college. Kessler was very productive in college, but at the same time he had obvious flaws, which is why he wasn't drafted until the third round despite his high PFF grade.

So it probably shouldn’t be cited as legitimate evidence in a player’s favor...including Coleman’s. :chuckle:

Still it’d be nice if a light went off in the kid’s head this year. We’d have a superb group of WRs.

I think it can be cited as a source, but like any source, it's not infallible. A good PFF rating isn't a bad thing, but it's also not a guarantee of a player's success, much like any single NBA advanced stat can't adequately tell you if a player is good or not, especially one who has never set foot on an NBA court before. And for that matter, great prospects bust all the time. Coleman was pretty indisputably a great prospect, arguably the best of his draft class heading into the draft. Thus far, he's shown flashes, but he's been held back by injuries and now he's got a new front office that, as is ever the case, wants to bring in their own guys and he'll probably be the odd man out.

Is he a bust? Too early to say yet, as he could certainly catch on for another team and go on to realize his potential. I think the ship has sailed on him realizing it in Cleveland, though. The new front office doesn't seem interested in giving him the chance.

At any rate, you'll never be able to adequately sum up a player's worth with a single statistical number, no matter how well-developed the system for generating that number is. That's why we'll always have traditional scouts who actually watch tape, and why the best teams find a way for those types of scouts to co-exist and work in concert with analytics guys.

Corey Coleman was a projected first rounder by almost everyone

Doesn't have anything to do with PFF's grade of him.

It's a make or break year for him. I think he'll be swell but that's just my opinion!!!!

Why do you say the ship has sailed for him here? Because they brought in Landry and Callaway?

At any rate, can't really say the guy is a bust yet in all seriousness, but it's also really hard to speak in his favor at this point.

They brought in a bunch of new WRs and we've been hearing trade rumors, which makes me think he's not Dorsey's guy and thus he's gone at some point.

We'll see. Maybe they will sell high if he plays well, but seeing as he'll be what, 3rd receiver? It's not like he's going to put up massive production even if he does get his head on straight.

I don't think his head being on straight was the issue. It was a combination of injuries keeping him off the field and wildly inconsistent targets and QB play when he was on it. He tended to perform well when he got a lot of targets and poorly when he was on there.

Well he isn't going to be fed a lot of targets, so, see ya, Corey.

Maybe he will catch on somewhere else. Will be interesting.

I hope we keep Coleman. He’s got talent and is good when used correctly. Just can’t stay healthy. I’d hate to trade him for a 3rd round pick.

I think he's got a good shot. The talent is there, and he's flashed when he's played and gotten targets. He also doesn't seem to have any problems related to work ethic or attitude. Seems like a stand-up guy who wants to work hard and succeed from what I've read of him, although admittedly I don't have the access an NFL team does there.

If he succeeds, though, I think it will be somewhere that's not Cleveland.

Coleman will have the chance to prove himself this season, but he has got to stay healthy and show he has been doing his best to do and know the playbook really well. This is his chance to really shine even as the 3rd receiver, a good QB will always use his check downs.

The Cavs' record w/Mayfield at the game:

1-0.

He must attend the rest of the games.

This is pure seat of the pants, but....

It sometimes takes awhile for guys at certain positions to show that they are genuine NFL talents. QB, offensive line, etc.. But for other positions, it seems like you can tell pretty quickly, even if it takes them a while to reach their full potential.

Coleman has never really looked special to me. Competent, on occasion, but that's it. Never really seen that flash after the catch, etc.. I'm trying to think of a receiver who has been similarly unimpressive after his first two season, then had a huge breakout, and I just can't. Not saying it hasn't happened -- just that it seems pretty damn rare to me.
